Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our club members. We look forward to getting back on the field in 2024.

The day started with a lovely surprise during the set-up and preparation by Rathcabbin Tidy Towns for their Christmas Craft Fair. Vincent Corcoran arrived with a nod to our native and local craft in the form of a generous donation of turf. Great timing and lovely to be able to sell it locally on the day!

This day included 13 craft tables to support crafters or all ages selling their produce and festive gifts. We’re happy to hear the positive feedback from craft tables on business level for them and the enjoyable day in general.  It’s great to support younger school pupils having their first experience of managing a table and selling their wares. It’s more than a craft fair and talent did shine. It’s a festive appreciation day where we give back locally and say thanks to all by bringing this event to life for Christmas season. We included a magician for the children this year and hosted a festive art competition for all three schools locally. Their artwork decorated the community hall on the day and many of them got to meet Santa too when he paid a visit that evening. We’d like to thank the main sponsors for our 19 raffle prizes on the day -  Mulrooney’s, Secret Essence, Bobby Mcloughlin, Pamela Kennedy, Keith Brady, In Your Prime and Ladies Day Boutique, Portumna, Hassetts of Banagher, Doherty’s Roscrea, Corrib Oil and the many beautiful donations received from locals that went into hampers and prizes we created for the day itself.

It’s been a great year of progress for Rathcabbin Tidy Towns. We look forward to our AGM shortly after taking decorations down in early 2024. We thank everyone who helped and supported Tidy Towns throughout 2023 and hope you enjoy a festive break! We welcome new volunteers who’d like to get involved from next Spring onwards.

Keep your child safe online this Christmas - MEP Colm Markey

Fine Gael’s Colm Markey is calling on parents to take proactive measures to keep their children safe online this Christmas.

The Midlands-North-West MEP said help is at hand for anyone struggling to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital world.

MEP Markey highlighted the work of the Irish Safer Internet Centre - co-funded by EU - as the one-stop shop for information and advice.

He commented, “Cyberbullying, addiction, in-game spending and inappropriate material are some of the main issues that parents are bringing to the Irish Safer Internet Centre, which includes the ISPCC, the National Parents Council, Hotline.ie and Webwise.ie. With Christmas around the corner, now is the time for parents to be mindful of their children’s digital safety. By staying informed and taking proactive measures, we can create a safer space for our kids to enjoy the benefits of technology responsibly.”

“As a father of two young children, I’m aware of the challenges that parents face in navigating the online world, particular when it comes to online gaming. Whether it’s monitoring screen time, setting parental controls, or engaging in open and honest conversations, help is at hand for parents who might need support and guidance”, he continued.

Markey said the Irish Safer Internet Centre has some useful tips for keeping children safe online over the festive season.

“It’s important to do your research when purchasing a new device, game or app. Familiarise yourself with how it works and whether it’s appropriate for them to play. Explore the safety and privacy settings and find out how to enable any parental controls. When it comes to screen time, striking a healthy balance is key. Agree clear rules and set a good example. It’s also important to have open and regular dialogue. Ensure your child knows they can come to you if they see something that upsets them. Above all, parents should be aware that expert advice is available through the Irish Safer Internet Centre”, he concluded.

Winter Advise.
With temperatures noticeably falling across the country since last week, winter has well and truly arrived. And while many of us are beginning to focus on the festive period ahead, we should remember that harsh weather conditions bring a risk of injury and illness, particularly to ageing adults living alone at home.
To help us all stay safe at home this winter, Home Instead’s National Clinical Lead, Danette Connolly, has provided advice for ageing adults, carers, friends, and relatives.

Here are her six tips for staying safe this winter: 1. Wear layers of clothing: Significant drops in internal temperature can lead to serious health complications for ageing adults. To stay warm throughout the day, it’s best to wear several thin layers of clothing and to ensure all internal windows and doors are kept closed.

2. Stay stocked up: With the cold and wet weather, older people may be reluctant to go to the shops. By offering to do a shop for your older neighbour, friend, or relative, you can help them to have all their essentials to hand, including groceries, solid fuels, and medical prescriptions.

3. Eat well: Regular, hot meals keep the body warm. Porridge, which is quick and easy to prepare, is an excellent source of nutrients and fuels the body for hours. Stocking an ageing adult’s press with non-perishables like oats, tinned fruit and vegetables, and pasta, will ensure that there is always something nourishing on the menu.

4. Winter-proof the home: Harsh weather conditions can increase the chance of accidents for ageing adults. During the winter months, make sure that pathways are cleared from wet leaves, internal draughts are blocked, and electrical devices are unplugged when not in use.

5. Plan for emergencies: Winter can sometimes bring extreme weather, leading to power cuts at home. Be prepared for events like this by ensuring that older adults have items such as fuel and non-perishable food at home and that they have emergency and close family contact numbers to hand. Keeping the Eircode beside the phone can also assist emergency services in reaching them as quickly as possible, should the need arise.

6. Stay connected: For many the festive season brings joy, but for some it is a time of increased loneliness and depression due to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). It is crucial that family, friends, and neighbours check in on older loved ones to make sure they are feeling okay during this season.

Great News from Rathcabbin.

We’d like to thank all locals for support during the year and especially those volunteers missing from this photo - Elaine Rigney Sherlock, Tom Lewis, Denise Clancy and Ciaran Yates who contribute to all the groups work regularly.

We’ve happily been awarded some monies for our progressive work by the local council. This prize money will go directly back into the village upkeep and projects for 2024. We thank all residents for your contributions around your homes, it all helped this recognition.

Late Michael O’Brien.

There was sadness in the parish last week when news filtered through of the passing of  Michael O’Brien, Derry, Rathcabbin.
Michael who was in good health passed away suddenly at his home on Thursday November 2nd.
Born into a well known parish family, and raised at The Pike, Rathcabbin, Michael, like so many of his generation, emigrated to London after his finished school in the 1960’s and quickly found work.  He set up home there when he met and married another Irish, Mary Hynes from nearby Fivealley. They went on to raise their family of five children and visited their respective families back in Ireland on several occasions over the years. They both always had a desire to return to Ireland and when Michael retired from his job as a crane driver – a position he held for 38 years, their thoughts turned to settling back in Rathcabbin which they were delighted to do 19 years ago.  They both had a big celebration with their family back in 2018 when they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Sadly, Mary passed away on May 5th 2021 and Michael was hearth broken. He travelled over to London on many occasions visiting family and friends in the last few years and spending weeks with them while also visiting former neighbours and friends.
Michael was a friendly, chatty, kind gentleman who enjoyed the company of others and he will be sadly missed now from the community that he loved so much.
Pre-deceased by his loving wife Mary, granddaughter Lily, brothers Neddie, Joey and Johnny and sister Mary, he is survived by and sadly missed by his heartbroken children Debbie, Jackie, Damien, David and Michael, grandchildren Sean, Lucie, Michael, Erin, Kieran, Callum, Alexander, Kian and Ruari, his daughters-in law Emma, Melanie and Rachel, sons-in-law Julian and Chris, his brothers Sackie (The Pike), Jimmy (England) and sister Martha (England), in-laws, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends on both sides of the Irish Sea to whom sympathy is offered.
After funeral Mass in Our Lady Queen of Ireland Church Rathcabbin on Friday morning last 10th  burial took place in Bonoham cemetery Rathcabbin.  May he rest in peace.

At a recent meeting held in Lorrha Community Hall on the subject of retrofitting our homes and community buildings (a necessary response to dealing with rising energy costs and climate change), the attendance heard of significant grants that can now be availed of by communities such as ours to address this increasingly urgent reality. Emphasis was placed on the importance of a COMMUNITY -based response to this offer in order for it to be cost-effective. In addition to grant aid, communities who respond will be assisted with the necessary guidance for the project and will also be in a position to qualify for additional community-related benefits. This represents an exceptionally attractive opportunity for us to benefit from assistance to make our homes/community buildings more energy efficient and also do our part as a community to address climate change. In order to facilitate a fuller community response to this proposal, a follow-up meeting will be held in Rathcabbin Hall on Tuesday, 14th November at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome, please come along.

Rathcabbin Lady Shortlisted For Award.

By: Rose Mannion.

Rathcabbin resident Mary Vaughan has been selected as a contender for the President's Award for the International Coaching Federation (ICF), Irish Chapter based on an initiative she herself started around 18 months ago. Mary works as a Professional Coach with credentials recognised internationally via the ICF and also as a Human Resources Specialist and Consultant offering L&D support as well as HR support to companies and employees.

As a coach, Mary is the only individual initiative in contention this year for president's award and also one that reaches the entire island or Ireland enabling access to all people in society equally. Her initiative is based on the power of journaling for any individual and the positive benefits that it can bring to a person's life and along this journey the opportunity to get a sense of what it's like to work with a coach is also uncovered for all who take up the monthly Journaling for joy challenge.

Mary says ‘ It's especially great at this time of year ...and a 7am daily suits parents to avail of quiet time prior to children getting up and the school rush. Everyone is done and dusted between 7am and 7:25am - having had accountability and support to take quiet, uninterrupted time for themselves in a safe space from their home as they claim their day and get ready for whatever it brings. The benefits I witness for people have been phenomenal with many varied depending on the person’ she said.

Mary has written a blog which featured in Irish mental health charity publication, A Lust for Life. She moved to Rathcabbin 22 months ago and started this off upon a move to the country from years of town and city living.

‘ I only just found out last week that I was nominated and the awards ceremony are this upcoming Saturday 11th.  in Trinity College Dublin’  said an excited Mary. ‘With many association and team initiatives, I don't anticipate winning, however it is nice to be considered for my contribution relevant to coaching and its positive impact on society in Ireland’ she said. If you would like to read her blog click on the following  https://icfireland.com/icf-ireland-awards-2023-shortlist/presidents-award-2023-contender-journaling-for-joy-initiative/   where you will also find her instagram for the journaling sessions/challenge.

An advocate for mental health awareness,  is involved in a variety of charity work in addition to relationship coaching. A member of the International Coaching Federation, Mary co-founded Irish International Coaching Circle as a close support group for new and experienced coaches. Mary’s wish is that all individuals continue to grow in learning to start treating others as they themselves would like to be  treated. Instagram | LinkedIn

Late Tom Milne.

The peaceful death took place on Thursday October 19th at Barnett Hospital of Tom Milne, London and formally Ballymacegan, Lorrha.
Tom, who had turned 79 the previous month, had been ill for some time but his death nonetheless was unexpected and came as a shock to his family.
Born and raised in Ballymacegan, the second eldest in a family of eight, to Tony and Eileen, he attended Redwood NS and then St. Molasses College in nearby Portumna. When he finished school, he worked locally for a while but in September 1962, like so many of his generation, he emigrated to London.
It wasn’t long until he established himself as a brilliant landlord and bar manager, his most notable pubs was the Duke of Clarence and the Mornington Arms in Camden, making it into pub of the year in the 1980’s.
Tom was the man to go to when young Irish people arrived in London without a job or a place to stay. He was the friendly, helpful smiling face that they needed and he didn’t fail them, finding them work and a place to stay.  In 1997 when Rathcabbin Players took their play ‘The Field’ to the Winston Junction Hotel in London, Tom was there to meet, greet and welcome them. A very charitable man he helped fundraise for many charities over the years and he helped organise many a St. Patrick’s Day parade in London. He was a very good friend to another Lorrha woman, the late Sr. Malachy Mannion, and he and his friend Johnny White from Drangan, organised several golf classics to help her feed the homeless.
Tom won an U15 county medal with Lorrha in 1958 four years before he emigrated. He soon became a member of Brothers Pierces hurling club in London and served the club well as player, manager and chairman. He also played an instrumental part in the founding of Pearses camogie club. At the time of his passing, he was life president of the hurling club.
He was also a long standing servant of the London Tipperary Association, hosting the county’s hurling team on many an occasion and was also life President at the time of his passing. He was honoured with a Lochra Gael award in 2017 in the Dome in Thurles by Tipperary GAA for his contribution over the years. Tom also took a huge interest in greyhound and horse racing and was also a keen golfer. Just last May, he joined the London GAA Golf Society trip to Wexford with his son Tony.
Tom often visited and stayed with his family in Lorrha down through the years, attending Lorrha matches and visiting his friends. He will be sadly missed by everyone who knew him but in particular by his family.
Pre-deceased by his sister Kathleen Gallagher, he is survived by Kathy his long time partner and best friend, children Susan, Tony and Michelle, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild, brothers John and Tony (Lorrha), sisters Ann Cooper (Scotland), Eileen King (England), Marie Reeder (Bettystown, Meath), Betty Carew (Dublin), nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends both in England and Ireland to whom sympathy is extended.
Tom’s Requiem funeral Mass will take place on Thursday November 2nd at 11.30am in St. Mary Magdalen Church, 6 Athenaeum Road, Finchley, with burial afterwards in Islington & St. Pancras Cemetery, 278 High Rd. Finchley. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

RTE’s Nationwide in Gloster House.

RTE's Nationwide programme will air a feature on Gloster House, just outside Birr, on Friday, November 3rd, as part of 'the big house series’ that runs for a number of episodes.
Reporter, Mary Fanning visits Tom and Mary Alexander, a Dublin couple who bought the house and embarked on a labour of love in a 22-year restoration.   Mary interviews Maura White who was in service at Gloster when she was 15 years old! She is now in her late eighties.  Mary Fanning hears about the magnificent restoration the Alexanders embarked on.
Offaly County Council's conservation architect and author, Rachel McKenna, tells Mary; ' the restoration of this house is a legacy, not just to the county but to the country.'
In the 1950s, the Salesian nuns used Gloster as a convent and some of the nuns returned for the RTE filming, to walk the corridors of their youth and recant very happy memories.
Mary Alexander outlines the history of the house as a beacon of sociality through the decades and how they are, now continuing that tradition using the old school chapel for weddings and events.
Mary Fanning also speaks to renowned historian, Robert O'Byrne who has mapped every house North and South of historical importance. 'What impressed me most about Tom and Mary Alexander, aside from their Herculean dedication to restoration is their generosity in sharing the house with those whose stories are embedded in its corridors, walls, rooms, shadows and bones!  They are wonderful people who have left such a legacy.' says Mary.

Fr. Terence O’Brien OP

The following piece was sent to this web site from  Patrick Jordan O'Brien OP a Dominican living in Galway with a keen interest in Terence Albert O'Brien.
Patrick always had some interest in the martyr though he is no relation... and spent some years in Limerick and tried to trace some of the history and the locations that are associated with TAOB. in the Limerick and south Tipperary area. Patrick visited Lorrha on a number of occasions and describes our village as a quiet and peaceful place.

Patrick says that he cannot claim to promote the cause of TAOB for canonization along with the other 16 or so martyrs, but he does try to keep his name alive and before the minds of people. He  has various bits and pieces - that he has put together over the years. Patrick also tells us readers that he is no historian, just a person with an interest who has written a few pieces over the years and this is the latest piece for the Galway Tribune for this week.

A New Patron

With the link between the dioceses of Galway and Clonfert, Galway has gained a new patron, Blessed Terence Albert O’Brien. He was prior of the Dominican priory in Portumna he later became provincial of the Irish Dominicans and later again Bishop of the diocese Emly, now part of Cashel and Emly.

Due to Cromwell’s persecutions of Catholics, he was unable to live in his diocese and sought refuge in Limerick. In 1651 he encouraged the people to stand united during the second siege. When General Ireton broke their resistance Bishop O’Brien faced death on the gallows – he was hanged, drawn and quartered for treason, i.e., defying the realm.

Blessed Terence Albert O’Brien’s memory is kept on October 30. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1992 along with sixteen others. We note in passing that when provincial of the Irish Dominicans, Terence Albert petitioned Rome that the Dominican Sisters of Galway, first established in 1644, be formally recognised as members of the Dominican Order.

TAOB is associated with Portumba as well as Lorrha and of course Limerick where he was martyred in 1561.

Take Note

This note is taken from the Irish Press of 19 May 1977

Reference in the article to the martyred Bishop of Emly, Terence O’Brien, reminds me that Bishop O’Brien, was prior of the Dominican Abbey …. at Lorrha for several years. There is a tradition in Lorrha that Dr O’Brien gave his Rosary to a man just before his public hanging. It was said that this man brought the rosary to Lorrha where it remained in safe keeping for some time. Its present whereabouts is now unknown, but it is thought that it may have found its way to some house of the Order in Ireland. We of the parish of Lorrha would very much like to know if it still survives.

Like Limerick, the parish of Lorrha and Dorra owe a deep debt to the Dominican friars. When the priory there was destroyed by Ireton, they remained in the locality, said Mass, and administered to the flock.

Northwest of the village in a wood at Moatfield, there still remains a Mass Rock, on which some devoted but unsung friar said Mass for the faithful of Lorrha and Dorra

Sympathy.

Sympathy is extended to Paddy O’Meara Lorrha and his brother Seamus on the death of their sister Kathleen O’Neill, Coralstown, Co. Westmeath which occurred on Monday October 16th. After funeral Mass in St Agnes’ Church on Thursday, October 19th burial took place afterwards at Milltown cemetery Co. Westmeath. May she rest in peace.
Sympathy is also extended to Maura Reddin and family Banagher, and extended family on the death of her daughter Catherine (Sheehan) which took place in England last week. Pre-deceased by her father Tony.  Funeral arrangements later. May she rest in peace.

Late Kathleen Houlihan.

There was widespread sadness throughout the parish on Thursday October 19th last when word filtered through that Kathleen Houlihan, 3 St. Ruadhan’s Tce., Lorrha had slipped away quietly and peacefully earlier in the morning, and on the day of her 101st. birthday.  Kathleen, who had received her medal in the post to mark her birthday, passed away in the presence of her family in the care of Ealga Nursing Home, Shinrone where she had spent the last number of weeks.
A native of Summerhill, Co. Meath, the 3rd eldest in a family of four boys and three girls, Kathleen married Tom Houlihan, and they married in Basingstoke, England in 1954. Herself and Tom loved dancing and attended ceili dances up and down the country over many years and winning many prizes. A devout and religious lady throughout her life, Kathleen was a member of the local church choir for a number of years as well as the Apostolic Work Society.
This time last year, Kathleen held a party to mark her 100th birthday starting with a Mass of thanksgiving for a life well lived and St. Ruadhan’s Church was packed to capacity with Fr. Michael Kennedy P.P. Lusmagh and formerly Rathcabbin, assisted by Fr. Pat Deely, Redwood, Fr. Pat Mulcahy, former P.P. Lorrha, Fr. Tom O’Halloran Co P.P. Borrisokane and Lorrha and Fr. Michael Cooney Co. P.P. Terryglass and Lorrha officiating. Everyone adjourned to Maher’s afterwards to continue with the party with Kathleen enjoying the fun into the early hours. A few days later, Kathleen was thrilled to receive a visit from Bishop Fintan Monahan and held a long conversation with him in her home.
She was hearth broken at the death of two of her son’s Christy in 2012 and Noel in 2019 but her biggest loss was the death of the love of her life Tom, who passed away in 2018, yet she never lost Faith throughout it all and continued to attend daily Mass until recent weeks.
A lovely smiling lady she was always a pleasure to meet and have a chat with as she enjoyed the company of others and loved people calling to her home. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her but in particular by her family, sons Tommy (Lorrha) and Bernard (Borrisokane). Daughters-in-law Catherine, Imelda, Mary and Ita. Brother Joe (Trim) and Sister Ann (Summerhill). Her thirteen loving grandchildren and eight Great Grandchildren. Nieces, Nephews, Cousins, Neighbours and a wide circle of friends to whom sympathy is offered.
After funeral Mass in St. Ruadhan’s Church Lorrha on Sunday 22nd. burial took place in the adjoining cemetery. May she rest in peace.

Lorrha snatch victory at the death to capture the County Premier Intermediate Hurling title.

In doing so, the North Tipp club have made it two county titles in two seasons, having been promoted from the intermediate ranks just last year.
With a relatively young team and an ambitious coach in Brian Carroll (Coolderry) and an equally ambitious manager in Ken Hogan,  many had tipped them as contenders prior to the beginning of this championship, and Ken Hogan’s side have now delivered on their promise.  They very nearly landed the success last weekend, but an incredible late Mikey O’Brien point pushed the game to a replay on that occasion. In this instance however, Lorrha proved themselves as just about the better side, claiming an historic victory that earns them a place among Tipperary’s top-tier teams in 2024.

Cathaoirleach of Tipperary County Council, Councillor Ger Darcy and Cathaoirleach of Nenagh Municipal District Councillor John Rocky McGrath today welcomed the announcement on the creation of an additional 240 jobs at “The Lunch Bag” located at Lisbunny Business Park in Nenagh.

Councillor Ger Darcy said that “this is a very significant announcement and a strong vote of confidence in Nenagh and County Tipperary.  Tipperary County Council is delighted to have played our part in enabling this investment. In 2021 the Council made a decision to sell a 3.6-acre site to The Lunch Bag which is now facilitating this expansion. My congratulations to Ray Nangle CEO and Ger Killian MD of the “The Lunch Bag” whose vision, hard work and persistence has made the creation of these jobs possible”.

Councillor John Rocky McGrath noted that “Tipperary County Council purchased the Lisbunny Business Park in Nenagh in 2020 from Shannon Commercial Properties to facilitate growth of existing businesses in the Park and to provide a base for new businesses. This announcement represents a very significant step forward in achieving our overall objectives in facilitating new jobs for the town and wider region”

In July 2022, Tipperary County Council granted planning permission to Splitstone Ltd t/a “The Lunch Bag” for a new 2,800 sq.m. extension to their existing facility. The Council has also agreed to dispose of a site at Lisbunny to a company which provides a maintenance contract to The Lunch Bag and has been working with other local businesses to facilitate their expansion or location to Lisbunny.
