The Gathering in Lorrha / Dorrha Parish 2013
The parish of Lorrha / Dorrha extend the hand of welcome to all with the official launch of “Lorrha / Dorrha Heritage Festival” as part of Ireland’s “The Gathering” 2013, on Wednesday June 19th. A festival of events will take place over six days in Lorrha, Redwood and Rathcabbin. A very full programme of events will take place including the Bicentenary Celebrations of St. Ruadhan’s Catholic Church, unveiling of a plaque to Martin O’Meara VC followed by a pageant, music and food in Friars Park, Lorrha N.S. re-union dating back to the 1950’s and 60’s, GAA event and more. Wed. 19th -Mon 24th June 2013.
Wednesday 19th.
Hictorical tour of Lackeen Castle, guided by archaeologist, Caimin O’Brien. Participants to assemble in Lorrha village at 10.30a.m.
Launch of Festival at Social Afternoon hosted by Lorrha Active Retirement Association. Lunch 20 euro -pre booking necessary followed with social dancing by Pat and Richie.
Special Guests: Tony Reddin and Seamus King.
Venue: Community Hall, Lorrha from 1p.m. to 5.30p.m.
Concert : Traditional Irish Music performed by husband and wife Tommy Keane and Jacqueline Mccarthy and family.
Venue:Rathcabbin Church 8 pm to 9.30pm Free admission, donations welcome to defray expenses.
Thursday 20th.
Historical Walk through village of Lorrha with archaeologist, Caimin O’Brien, followed by lunch at Friars Tavern / The Shed. Participants assemble in the village at 10a.m. The historical tour continues in the afternoon (without Caimin) to arrive at Redwood Castle at 2pm. and will be conducted by Castle guide.
Lectio Divina (praying with Sacred Scripture) conducted by Dominican priest, Fr. Brendan Clifford.
Venue: Lorrha Community Hall at 2p.m.
Special Ceremony : Bicentenary Celebration of St.Ruadhan’s Catholic Church at 7p.m. in the Church. Chief Celebrant: Bishop Kieran O’Reilly, followed by refreshments in St. Ruadhan’s Community Hall.
Friday 21st.
Ritual to mark Midsummer Day at 10am in GAA Centre.
Schools’ Blitz – (team games, hurling, football, soccer etc)
Venue: St. Ruadhan’s Park, GAA Centre, 10.30am
Short Pageant: “The Cursing of Tara by St. Ruadhan,” organised by Lorrha Variety Group and performed in the grounds of St. Ruadhan’s Abbey (Church of Ireland) and the nearby Motte Hill. Time 8pm. approx.
The GAA Club will be holding a reunion of the 1983 Lorrha Intermediate Football and U21 Hurlers, 1993 Minor hurlers and 2003 Junior ‘B’ hurlers, all of whom won North titles in those years, also past and present members of the club complete with Barbecue and social night.
Venue: St. Ruadhan’s Park, GAA Centre, 9pm – 12.30am approx.
Pagan Night at Mahers, burning of the Witch! – Music. Time: 10pm
Saturday 22nd.
2 pm – 4 pm: Blitz for Juveniles (12 to 16 year olds) GAA Centre.
6 pm: Historical tour of Lorrha village for children.
7 pm: Lorrha National School pastpupils’ Reunion from the 1950’s and 1960’s in Mahers ‘The Shed’ Lorrha with music by Pat and Richie.
Folklore Commission Display.
Venues: Lorrha National School, Redwood National School and in Rathcabbin National School. Starting at 10am approx. display will be moved from one school to another and will be on view for 2 hours approx in each school.
Sunday 23rd.
10 am: Ecumenical Service.
Venue: Church of Ireland, Lorrha.
12 noon: Launch of CD which captures the sounds of Lorrha’s abbeys, preceded by a guided tour of village at 11am. Refreshments at 1 pm in the hall. This is a project which aims to introduce mindfulness with a specific emphasis on supporting the mental well-being of children in our community.
Venue: Augustinian Abbey.
2 pm: Unveiling of Memorial to Martin O’Meara VC in Lorrha Village, followed by WWI pageant.
Picnic in the Park, with entertainment by local group, Tradstone.
7.30 pm: Lorrha and Dorrha Peace Proms. Our school – going children unite to entertain with music and song in their “Voices of Angels” Concert.
Venue: Rathcabbin Church 7.30 to 9p.m.
Monday 24th.
10 am – 1 pm: Fun for all and Games Galore – for the young and the young at heart. Board games, card games, traditional/modern games, quiz.
Venue: GAA Centre.
