Summer Fete.

The annual Birr Summer Fete will be held in the Rectory Grounds on Saturday 25th June from 3.00pm. All the usual stalls will be there and your support would be appreciated. All are welcome.

St. Ruadhan’s Active Retirement.

On Wednesday 1st June the members enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Shed instead of having their usual weekly meeting. Many thanks to Lil and Denis Maher and their staff for the lovely meal and to Pat Conlon for providing the excellent music. On Wednesday 7th June the Order of Malta came and gave a talk on the benefits of First Aid in the Community. This was followed by a demonstration of CPR. Hopefully in the near future there will be a First Aid course for our members.
The following activities are planned for the remainder of June and for the month of July: Wednesday 22nd June there will be a buffet lunch followed by a social afternoon in the Community Hall Lorrha starting at 2.00pm. On Tuesday 28th June Fr Michael Kennedy is officiating at Mass in the Oratory Emanuel House Clonfert which starts at 11.30am followed by light refreshments. On Wednesday 29th June Cloughjordan Active Retirement Association have invited our group to their afternoon social in the GAA Complex. There is a boat trip on the Shannon planned for Wednesday 13th July and a evening at Limerick Racecourse on Thursday 21st July. Anyone wishing to join us on any of these trips please contact Nancy on 087 761 3458. We are looking forward to many more outings during the summer months.
We will not be holding any weekly sessions during the summer months. Our last get together will be this Wednesday 22nd June. The Committee would like to wish all the members a safe and enjoyable summer break and would like to thank everyone who supported us over the past year.

Summer Festival.

Prayer Music Reflection Talks Workshops and more will take place during the Catholic youth festival in Knock Shrine from June 24th to 26th. Details from the Church Notice Boards.

Tidy Towns.

A big thanks to all who continue their good work at keeping Lorrha village looking clean and tidy and to the residents in the village and approach roads who have answered our call to plant extra flowers and window boxes. Judging takes place this month we don’t know a date or a day. Work evenings continue every Tuesday evening and there is always room for help. Do remember it’s better to help a little than not at all. Meet outside the hall at 6.30p.m. If the time is too early for you do come along at whatever time suits. Alternatively if the evening is not suitable another evening can be arranged if you call (086) 8647166.

A.G.M.

Lorrha Development Association held their Annual general meeting on Thursday night of last week and a very positive response was received going forward. All present were clearly delighted with the new park development and the other works around the village which is presently in progress. The group had a three year plan drawn up and which has been submitted with the tidy towns application and which tasks to be identified as most important will be discussed at the next meeting. After all the formalities of the meeting were successfully dealt with the following were elected for the forthcoming year. Chairperson Rose Mannion vice chair Liz Hussey and Mary Walsh secretary Mary Coen treasurer Louis McCormack press relations officer Rose Mannion works manager John Houlihan. The residence committee have one change with Bridget Grover elected to the position of chairperson with Carmel Slevin elected to the positions of vice chair and secretary treasurer Mary Walsh assistant treasurer Bridget Grover. Before the meeting concluded a minutes silence was observed in memory of the late Felim O’Doherty first chairman of Lorrha Development which was founded back in 1985 and Maura Abbott who was book keeper to the schemes. The next meeting will take place in the hall on Tuesday night July 5th at 8p.m. and all are welcome to attend.

Tourist Office.

The South East Galway tourist office is open from June 7th. to September Monday to Friday 9.am to 5.30pm. (Lunch 1 – 2) at Abbey Street Portumna. People with tourism related businesses are invited to leave in information. Call (090) 9741867.

Today

Sunny spells this evening but scattered showers also some of them heavy at first with a slight risk of thunder. Later this evening the showers will become more isolated. Breezy with moderate to fresh west to northwest winds.

Tonight

Tonight most areas will become dry with good clear spells developing but there will be further scattered showers along Atlantic coasts and also possibly along parts of the north and northeast coasts. Turning quite cold with minimum temperatures of 5 to 9 Celsius. Winds decreasing light to moderate west to northwest.

Tomorrow

Tomorrow Thursday will have sunny spells everywhere but scattered showers will become more widespread once again some of them heavy especially in the midlands and east in the afternoon and early evening. However they’ll die out in many parts of the west and southwest during the day and in most other areas later. Highest temperatures 13 to 16 degrees with moderate west to northwest breezes.

Outlook

Thursday night will be mostly dry with light winds and slightly cooler than recent nights with lowest temperatures between 5 and 8 degrees. Friday will become cloudy with rain spreading from the west in freshening southerly winds and top temperatures will be 13 to 15 degrees. It will continue to be wet and windy on Friday night but mild with lowest temperatures around 10 to 12 degrees. The rain will gradually clear to showers on Saturday and it will become warm and humid with temperatures reaching 16 to 20 degrees. But the southwesterly winds will become fresh to strong. It will continue to be cloudy warm and humid on Sunday but mostly dry with isolated showers and winds moderating. It will continue to be unsettled early next week.

Launching the North Tipperary Volunteer Fair recently in Nenagh were members of Lorrha Development Association who were recipients of the CAVA Arts Culture and Heritage award the CAVA 2010 overall award and the National Tidy Towns Endeavour Award.

St. Ruadhan’s Active Retirement.

Weekly meetings continue every Wednesday in St. Ruadhan’s Community Hall from 2.30 to 4.30p.m. All are welcome to attend.

Remembrance Mass.

A special Mass of Remembrance to celebrate the memory of all patients who died in the MWRH Nenagh in 2010 is being held in St. John’s Church Nenagh on Tuesday night June 21st. at 7p.m. Families of the deceased have been invited to attend.

Congress Launch.

International Eucharistic Congress launch in our parish will take place at the weekend Masses on Sunday 19th June. Do you have any medals / memorabilia from the Eucharistic Congress which was held in Ireland in 1932? If so would you be so kind as to give them to the Parish on loan for display? Schools Feis.

Congratulations and well done to all the young people from the parish who participated and won trophies shields and medals in the Brigid Phelan school of dancing Feis which took place in Birr on Saturday last. The Irish dance tradition is well and truly alive in the parish judging by the ‘haul’ of silverware taken back on Saturday.
