Gardai Appeal.

Gardai are warning the public not to get duped by rogue tradesmen. Several gangs are roaming the country at present offering to do odd jobs and then demanding money. Some are even claiming to be from the ESB, from the water company or the phone company, saying there is a problem in the area and asking householders to go in and check lights, run taps or check their phone from inside the house for reception. Once those people gain entry, they then demand money and get violent and threatening.
The Gardai is advising that “Rogue tradesmen will charge exorbitant prices and have been known to bring people to the bank to withdraw money. Only use known, reputable workmen – ask your friends and neighbours. “If you are not expecting callers, look out the window to see who is at your door, have a viewer fitted in your door or a doorbell video linked to your phone – you can see who is outside without opening the door.  The Gardai advise to have a door chain / limiter fitted to your front door and keep the chain on if you must open the door. Make sure your back door is locked before you go to the front door. If you are going to engage, ask for ID – a genuine caller won’t mind! The basic rule is if you don’t know the person at your door, you shouldn’t let them in. Have adequate lighting at the front and rear doors. If anxious contact your local Gardaí. In recent days, some even posed as Gardai to several householders. Be aware and be alert to callers to your home.
Unfortunately, with the Earthquake in Turkey and Syria over the past week or so and with many aid organisations requesting donations, this is an ideal opportunity for thieves to steal your contribution. Be warned and check to be sure that the manner in which you use to make your donation, is safe and secure before you commit. Again, say Gardai, if you are not sure, check it out before making a donation.
