Lorrha Notes

Lorrha are crowned Intermediate North Hurling Champions.

David Fogarty leaves them behind

Two Lorrha men, the well know proprietor of the Friars Tavern, Denis Maher and his neighbour Tommy Houlihan set off on their bicycles to travel from Malin to Mizen Head in aid of Pieta House. The men are accompanied on their journey by Stephen Houlihan (Tommy’s cousin) who is providing back up supplies for the long journey. They left Lorrha on Monday morning last at 8am and they plan on covering about 60 km a day approx over the next two weeks. The men are delighted with the response they have received from the public towards their fundraising page so if you would like to donate you can do so on idonate.ie/thomas-denis. Follow them too on facebook at Thomas & Denis Cycle Malin to Mizen Head in Aid of Pieta House.  By donating, you are providing a lifeline to people across Ireland who are in suicidal distress or have been bereaved by suicide at some stage. Pietas’ professional therapists are taking phone calls and their Helpline will be available free of charge to everyone who needs their support. They rely on the generosity of supporters like you because more than 80% of their income comes from public donations and you make their life-saving counselling services possible. Through your kindness and generosity, you are ensuring that Pieta can keep going and keep being there for people in crisis.

Late Bridget Hartnett.

The peaceful death occurred on Wednesday 6th July and surrounded by her loving family, under the love and care of Portumna Retirement Village of Bridget Hartnett, Ballymacegan, Lorrha.
Bridgie was born in Cloughprior Carney on the 15th August 1931, the only daughter of Mary Anne and John Hayes, she had eight brothers that she wholeheartedly adored.  She was a hard worker from a young age and her attention to detail was a huge asset to her working life. Bridgie worked in Wallers of Prior Park for many years, and it was here that she learned valuable housekeeping skills which she carried with her throughout her life. Once Bridgie finished in Wallers, she began working in a place very close to her heart, Ballyartella Woollen Mills where she worked on the looms as a weaver and most importantly as an invisible mender. She cycled to work daily with her friends and always enjoyed the fresh country air, but never forgot the nuisance of an odd puncture.
Bridgie had a lot of pastimes, she had a great love of music as did her husband Johnny. Their love of music and dancing brought them together and would lead to a lifetime of happiness. They married in Puckane Church on the 24th  April 1957.
Soon after, saw their family grow with the arrival of their four children, John, Margaret, Breda and Tom. There were many happy years spent in Ballymacegan rearing their family together and creating lots of special memories here. She was a great neighbour and friend to all who knew her and indeed, anyone that knocked on her door was welcomed in with open arms.
Bridgie adored each of her six grandchildren, and enjoyed passing along some words of wisdom about marriage and relationships and would often ask them ‘When are you giving me a day out?’  She always had a positive outlook on life and enjoyed her weekly get together with her friends in the Active Retirement and the annual trip to Spanish point was always the highlight for her.
In her later years, Bridgie  moved to Portumna Retirement Village, her second home, where music and fun was in abundance. Bridgie continued to enjoy participating in sing songs and always had a big smile on her face to greet everyone that crossed her path. It was here under the loving care of staff and in the company of her loving family that Bridgie passed away peacefully on Wednesday 6th July. Her Funeral Mass took place in St. Peter and Paul’s Church Borrisokane on Saturday 9th July with burial afterwards in Cloughprior cemetery.  Predeceased by her husband John and her brothers, she is survived by her brothers Phil and Christy, sister-in-law Brenda, sons John and Tom, daughters Margaret (Lillis)and Breda (Reynolds), sons in law Seamus and Ger, daughters in law Kathryn and Mary, grandchildren Níamh, Seán Mairéad, Edel, Keith and Ólan, great-granddaughters Sophie and Amelia. Her nieces, nephews and wide circle of friends and neighbours to whom sympathy is offered.

Sympathy is extended to Teresa Cleary and family on the death of her husband Pat, Clonfinane, Carrig, who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family, wife Teresa, son Michael, daughter Edel, son in law John and adored grandson Billy,on Tuesday July 12th.
Predeceased by his father Michael, mother Eileen, his sister Marian and sister in law Chris Cleary. Sadly missed by his heartbroken sisters and brothers, Kathleen, Tim, Evelyn, Mona, John, Michael and Ann, his brothers in law, sisters in law, his many nieces and nephews, relatives, friends and neighbors.

Parish Cycle Road Trip.

The launch of the Lorrha Dorrha parish cycle road trip will take place on Sunday 24th July at 10am from outside the Sceál Shop/Community Hall in Lorrha. This will not be a road race but a social gathering of like minded cycling enthusiasts who will cycle the 46 km (approx) trip around the roads of the parish at a leisurely pace. The cyclists will travel around through Abbeyville, Rathcabbin, Ballymacegan Redwood etc. and there’s a leaflet in the Sceál shop with a map of the route that the cyclists will take for anyone wishing to join the group for the spin. If you would like to give it a try but don’t think you are fit enough, you can go as far as you wish as there will be no pressure on anyone to complete the full trip, or you can join in at any of the stages when the group are passing through the various areas. Pick up the leaflet and go from there. The group expect to make this a regular fixture and look forward to seeing everyone on the day.

Preparations Going Well.

Preparations are going very well for the arrival of the Martin O’Meara’s VC visit to Lorrha. On Saturday 13th August, the beginning of Heritage Week, the VC will be brought to Lorrha for one day only, which is expected to draw in big crowds who wish to view the VC which Martin was awarded. This will be the first visit of the VC in 106 years and will be the only visit before it returns to Australia, so everyone is invited to come all. More details of times and full programme of events will be available when fully organized. However, all of this costs money too and in order to support the hard working committee, your attention is drawn  to the collection buckets which are available in Sceal shop, Friars Tavern, Pat Hough’s, Kellys Rathcabbin, Ferry Inn and Mulrooney’s Ferry Service Station for anyone wishing to make a contribution to the homecoming. The committee also have a Go Fund Me page which is in operation at  https://www.gofundme.com/f/homecoming-of-martin-omearas-vc or by typing in Homecoming of Martin O’Meara’s VC  Go Fund Me Page, to help raise the necessary funds
required. Do please contribute if you can as all funds will be needed. Your support is much appreciated. You can follow us on www.lorrhadorrha.ie or on facebook  https://www.facebook.com/groups/403195614992761.
