Lorrha Notes

ANZAC Day in Lorrha.

Sunday last April 25th was Anzac Day and a very low key and brief wreath laying ceremony took place in Lorrha at the Martin O’Meara VC memorial. Because of current restrictions, the event complete with social distancing, was brief but respectful not just to all those from the parish who fought and died in WW1 but in particular to our parish VC recipient Martin O’Meara. The Australian Embassy made late contact during the week and arranged delivery of a wreath to the parish community. Pictured here are sisters Carmel and Sheila O’Meara Lissernane neighbours of Martin O’Meara who laid the wreath which was kindly organised by the Australian Ambassador HE Mr. Gary Gray. Carmel and Sheila are no relation to Martin.  More photographs can be viewed under Martin O’Meara.

Munster Draws Made.

Tipperary hurling manager Liam Sheedy and his football counterpart David Power can now set their sights on the grand prize that lies ahead of them when they return to training this week with their respective squads, the first time this year.  Tipperary’s Allianz National Hurling league fixtures will commence on May 8th  with all-Ireland champions Limerick hosting Liam Sheedy’s men in the Gaelic Grounds at 5:30pm. The Tipp hurlers will have their second game against Cork in Semple Stadium on Saturday 15 at 7:30pm, while there will be a double header in Semple Stadium on Saturday 22nd when the hurlers play Galway at 1:30pm and the footballers play Kildare at 4:40pm. Next up is a trip to Mullingar to play Westmeath on May 5th at 2.00pm. Finally, Tipp hurlers will take on Liam Cahill’s Waterford in Walsh Park on Sunday May 13th at 1:45pm. With a second chance in the hurling, all Tipp fans will be eager to see the Premier county progress this year. The best of luck to our own parish club players, Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher and Brian Hogan.
In the football, it’s a win or out situation with no second chance here. So for the first time in many a long year, Tipperary will go in defence of their title when they play Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds on May 15th at 5.00pm. Next up is a trip to Tullamore to play Offaly on May 29th at 3.00pm. Borrisokane club man and long serving Tipperary player Philip Austin bade farewell to the scene last week. Philip is wished all the best in his retirement.
In the Littlewoods Ireland national camogie league, Tipp seniors and Intermediate panels also return to training and will welcome getting back to group training just like their male counterparts. In round one, Tipp seniors play Cork on May 15th. , and in round two they play Waterford on May 22nd. The Intermediate  will also play Cork on May 15th. Galway on May 22nd and Kerry on May 29th.  The best of luck is extended to our own parish club player Clodagh McIntyre.
