Lorrha Notes

Flowers from the recent Biodiversity event in Lorrha.

Biodiversity Day

Sincere thanks to all from Lorrha Development Association, Lorrha N.S. and Sceal who together organised the Biodiversity Day which took place on Wednesday of last week at the Community Hall. Thanks also to all who attended and participated. The schoolchildren, who last year were awarded the Green Flag for their study of Biodiversity, gave us a flavour of how they have engaged with wildlife and a sense of their understanding of its importance. Their presentation was informative, inspiring and challenging. Michael O’Meara, MCC, spoke about his work as a beekeeper and drew our attention to some of the actions we can take to help bees, the most important pollinating insects. Well done everyone.

Golfing News.

Rags golfing society are off to Mountrath golf club for their next outing on Saturday June 22nd. Tee off at 11.00am.

TidyTowns:

The judging of the TidyTowns competition now in full swing. Much work still remains to be done in Lorrha village, specifically the sweeping of the footpaths, removal of weed growth, tidying/weeding of flowerbeds and of course help with the watering of the flowers throughout the summer months. Lorrha Development welcome your help and co-operation for any of this.

New Dog Fouling Bins Fitted.

Together with Tipperary Co. Council, Lorrha Development/Tidy Towns recently installed two new mutt mitts in the village to help people with dogs to easily dispose of dog litter. Mutt mitts are handy plastic gloves that turn into bags and people can pick up safely after their dog and take home the litter with them to dispose of.  The mutt mitts were provided by Tipperary County Council who last week launched an anti-dog fouling campaign.

The campaign will target “hotspot” dog fouling areas, with wardens out in the early mornings and late evenings. The council will also place mobile pop-up stands promoting anti-dog fouling in areas where there is high footfall such as around libraries, participating supermarkets and swimming pools. To help owners dispose of their dog waste in a safe manner Tipperary County Council have installed mutt mitt dispensers throughout the county and are urging community groups to avail of the mutt mitts.
