Lorrha Notes

Late Richard Bourke.

The death occurred on Monday Sept 10th of Richard Bourke, Lehinch, Lorrha, surrounded by his loving family in the care of all the staff at Tullamore General Hospital.
Richie who was 60 years old, was a huge presence in the parish of Lorrha and for 43 years he could be seen every Sunday playing the Organ for the choir in Rathcabbin church. He played for countless Communions, Confirmations, Weddings and Funerals. Such was his service to the church that in 2016 he was awarded the Benemerenti medal by Pope Francis, which was a very proud honour for Richie and his family and was celebrated with a ceremony in Rathcabbin church. Outside of church music Richie was a very accomplished musician and singer and from the early days he set up a band with his brother John and wife Bernie called the “Fugitives”. Indeed right up to the present day he played on the social dancing scene and could regularly be seen playing in venues right across Tipperary and surrounding counties.

Richie began his working life in the County Arms Hotel in Birr and then took up a position with Glennon’s wholesalers, also in Birr. He proceeded to set up his own wholesale business before purchasing Rooney’s pub and shop and making the move to Lorrha village from Graigue, Rathcabbin in 1987. He and his family spent 13 years in Lorrha and ran a very successful business, bringing life to the village and running the Lorrha festivals for many years which saw crowds flock to the village in a way not seen before or since. In the latter years of his time in Lorrha, Richie entered the insurance business with NZI as a salesman and decided to concentrate on this full time when selling the business and moving with his family to their current residence at Lahinch, Lorrha, He moved onto Canada Life (now Irish Life) from NZI and progressed to become a senior manager in the company. His days in Canada Life/Irish Life provided him with great enjoyment and he made some of his best friends through his job. He also managed a very successful team and was rewarded with some great trips abroad to various destinations that himself and his wife Bernie thoroughly enjoyed.

Richie will be a huge loss to the parish of Lorrha but mostly to his family, his wife Bernie, his three sons, Darran, Richard and Colin, daughter Clodagh and daughter in law Shauna. His two grandchildren who he absolutely adored – Tiernan and Ella. His sisters Josie, Nuala, Marian and Angela, his brothers Eamonn, Ger and Brian. He was pre-deceased by his parents Paddy and Teresa, brother John and sister Dina. To all we offer our deepest sympathies. After funeral Mass in Our Lady Queen of Ireland Church Rathcabbin on Thursday 13th burial took place in Bonoham Cemetery.  Ar Dheis De go raibh a anam.
