North Tipperary Ploughing.

The 51st annual North Tipperary Ploughing Championships will take place on Sunday March 6th  in Terryglass on the lands of Brendan and Mairead Tierney by kind permission. The site is situated just out of the village on the Ballinderry road. Proceedings gets under way at 12.30pm. Usual tractor classes plus three vintage classes, one classic class and horse class. Competitors are requested to pre enter by Thursday March 3rd to the secretary Denis Cahalan on (087) 7793719. Trade stands will be welcome while for the younger people there will be a bouncing castle available. Raffle tickets are presently on sale from all members and will also be available on the day of the ploughing. Draw will take place on Saturday 26th March in Paddy’s Bar, Terryglass. A percentage from the gate takings will be made to North Tipperary Hospice on the night. Your support on the day will be much appreciated.

Open Day.

Lorrha N.S. will hold their open day on Thursday March 10th from 2 to 4pm.  This is an ideal opportunity to view the school and meet the staff. All are welcome. If parents are unavailable on that day please contact the school and we can arrange a time that suits you. Sympathy.

Sympathy is extended to the Parnell family, Killeen and formerly Rathcabbin on the death of Michael last week. After funeral Mass in St. Brendan’s Church Birr on Wednesday 24th burial took place in Clonoghill Cemetery. May he rest in peace.
Sympathy is also extended to the family and relatives of Madeleine Forkan, Swinford,  County Mayo, née Frawley, late of Lorrha, who died recently. May she rest in peace.

Church News.

First Friday Mass on March 4th will be celebrated in Lorrha Church at 9.30a.m.  Confessions beforehand.   Please note there will be  no Mass in Rathcabbin Church on Friday evening. Dates for family Participation in First Communion and Confirmation Mass. Saturday, 5th March    – Redwood Church at 7.30p.m .  Sunday, 6th March  –  Lorrha Church at  10.00am and  Rathcabbin Church  at  11.30a.m.
During the Season of Lent  we will continue to recite the Rosary before Sunday/Vigil  Mass in our churches.

Spring De-Clutter.
Thinking of clearing out the wardrobe to make room for the Spring collection? Lorrha Development/ Tidy Towns continue with unused clothes collection throughout the Winter months. De-clutter your wardrobe, attack your attic, recycle all unwanted/unused items of clothing to make room for your Spring collection. We will accept any kind of bag or in bags provided by the committee. We can collect your unwanted items. Just call or text  (086) 8647166, (086) 8493595 or (086) 8355405 with your name and details. Please note we cannot accept Duvets, bedding, household linen, pillows and cushions, carpets, rugs and mats (including bath, shower and toilet mats), soiled or wet clothing. We appreciate your support. All money raised from all fundraising ventures is used for the ongoing work around Lorrha Village which helps to keep two adults employed.

Redwood NS

Redwood NS – Easter Science & Computing Activity Camp

Redwood NS will be holding an Easter Science & Computing Activity Camp from Monday 21st – Thursday 24th March in the school from 9.30am to 2.00 pm. Activities include hands on science experiments, design and make, photography, cookery, photostory, Kahoot, powerpoint, nature trails, aistear (learning through play) and lots and lots more!! The camp is €10 per child per day. The camp are open to children from 3 to 10 years old. Dates for your diary – Redwood NS

A talk on ‘Mental Health & Well being’ will take place in Redwood NS on Wednesday, 6th April at 7.30p.m and on ‘Anti-bullying and Cyber-bullying’ which will take place on Wednesday, 10th May at 7.30p.m.  Both courses are free of charge and are being led by the NPC (National Parents Council) All are welcome to attend.

Fundraiser.

Shannon Rangers soccer club will host Brendan Grace in concert on in Coolbawn Quay on Thursday night March 10th at 8pm. The organisers are asking for your support and you won’t be disappointed with Brendan on stage. Information and tickets from (087) 8120841 or (087) 7423990.

Shorelines Table Quiz – Friday, March 11th

On Friday March 11th, come along to the annual Table Quiz in aid of Shorelines Arts Festival 2016 in the Boathouse Bar. Starting at 8.30 pm, there will be a great variety of questions and prizes to be won. Adults: €10 and Students: €5. Please support the local arts group who are planning another super arts festival September 15th-18th.

Spring Celebration Concert – Friday, March 18th

Swing into Spring – a concert to celebrate music & words with Omna Singers, Portumna Pen Pushers and local guests including Miriam Donoghue, Anna Browne, Mary Smith, Anne McGhee, Muirne Goode & friends, Treeny Hogan-Canning, Eric Flaherty and Laura Byrne. This fundraising event for Portumna Arts Group will take place on Friday, March 18th in Portumna’s Christ Church 8pm-10pm. Tickets at €10 available from March 1st at Hayes & Hayes Pharmacy, The Cottage Store Antiques, Palmerston Stores, Ladies Day and The Beehive. Seating limited so get your ticket soon.

Foróige Volunteers from Tipperary Jimmy Ryan, Mary O’Sullivan, Shauna Keyes, Jackie Brazil, Theresa Smith and Ben O’Keeffe at the 46th Foróige Volunteers’ Annual Conference which took place recently

  • Six volunteers represent Tipperary at 46thAnnual Foróige Volunteers’ Conference  
  • ‘Young People in 2016 – Shaping Ireland’s Future’theme of major national conference which hears that youth organisation engages with more than 54,000 young people and 5,500 volunteers across Ireland 

Six volunteers representing Tipperary attended the 46th National Volunteers’ Conference of Foróige, Ireland’s leading youth organisation, which took place recently.

The six – from Clerihan and Carrick-on-Suir – were amongst the more than 220 Foróige volunteers from all over the country who took part in the conference, themed ‘Young People in 2016 – Shaping Ireland’s Future’, which was held in Hotel Westport in Co Mayo at the weekend.

Speaking at the conference, Chairperson of Foróige Michael Lynskey paid tribute to the Foróige volunteers across the country who give their time to help improve the lives of young people.

“Last year, over 400,000 hours were given freely by volunteers in Foróige – it’s a staggering amount of time, energy and commitment. Our volunteers help equip young people with the skills, knowledge and attributes they need to lead the best lives that they possibly can and we are truly grateful.”

Foróige now works with 54,000 young people and 5,500 volunteers each year through a network of 600 clubs, 150 projects and national programmes such as Entrepreneurship, Citizenship and Leadership.

Lorrha GAA

Senior: Lorrha will host Moyne-Templetuohy in the opening round of the County Challenge Cup in Moatfield on Sunday, 13th March at 12 noon.

Under 21: The under 21 footballers were forced to concede a walkover against Moneygall/Clonakenny on Sunday and have now exited the championship.

Under 16: Lorrha Rovers begin their ‘A’ football championship campaign against Nenagh Eire Og in Nenagh this Saturday, 5th March at 4.00pm

Membership: for 2016 is now due. Rates were also confirmed with all inclusive of Gym membership: €90 – Adult player; €50 – Minor/College student; €30 – Non-playing Adult (+€70 extra for gym membership for 12 months); €20 – Juvenile (16 and under); €90 – Family (2 adults and 2 children, capped at €100 for three or more children). Closing date is 31st March. This date will be strictly enforced and no monies will be accepted beyond this date. It is important to remember that our total number of adult members by 31st March is the number the County Board will use towards our ticket allocations for Tipperary games so it is in your interest to have membership paid by then. 1916 Commemoration Day: Lorrha GAA Club in association with Lorrha & Dorrha Historical Society are hosting a 1916 Commemoration Day and celebration of local heritage in the GAA Centre, Moatfield on Easter Sunday, 27th March at 3pm.  All are invited to attend events which include a celebration of Lorrha GAA and a reenactment of hurling from the 1916 era which promises to be an exciting event as the parish is split into four mixed teams which will battle for their townland. This will be followed by a reading of the proclamation of independence and raising of the tri-colour by schoolchildren from Lorrha, Rathcabbin and Redwood National Schools. These activities will be followed by refreshments in the Clubhouse and traditional music from local band Tradstone and guest musicians. There will also be prizes for the best adult and child outfit as everyone is urged to dress in the style of 1916. Poker Classic: Lorrha GAA Club will be holding a Poker Classic in the GAA Centre on Saturday, 12th March from 8pm. Tickets €10 are on sale and there will also be a draw as part of the night.

Lorrha CountryFest 2016: Tickets (€20) are available from Kevin Molloy (0876738986) for this years Country Music Festival at Moatfield which takes place on Sunday, 17th July from 12 noon to 7pm. Line-up includes Mike Denver, Robert Mizzell, Louise Morrissey, The Conquerors, Johnny Brady, Pete Kennedy, Sean Slattery & The Connections as well as local band Tradstone. A day not to be missed!

Anniversary Mass: The anniversary Mass for the late Tony Reddin takes place in St Rynagh’s, Church, Banagher, this Sunday, 6th March at 11.30am.
