Tipperary v Galway

As part of the build up to this Sunday’s All-Ireland Senior Hurling semi-final between Tipperary and Galway, RTE’s Championship magazine show “Thank GAA it’s Friday” will feature a segment from Lorrha GAA club. Airing this Friday night at 8.30pm on RTE2, the show will include interviews from past and present players.

 

Recent Wedding.

The wedding of Marie Shewbridge, daughter of Tom & Margaret, Lorrha, and  Michael Briody, son of Mick & Linda, Longford took place on July 23rd. in St. Ruadhan’s Church, Lorrha. The bride was attended by her sister Elaine and her cousin Sheila Melody while the bestman was  Stephen Briody, the grooms brother and the groomsman was their son Ronan Shewbridge.  Freya McCann, a niece was flowergirl and she was accompanied by the pageboy Matthew Hanlon, nephew.  The lovely ceremony was celebrated by Fr. Paul F. Murphy of Renmore Army Barracks, Galway while the church music was provided by Colin Fahy. Both mothers, Margaret and Linda brought the offertory gifts to the altar. Afterwards the newly married couple joined their family and friends for their reception which was held in the Athlone Springs Hotel.   Congratulations and many good wishes is extended to Marie and Michael as they settle down to married life in Lorrha.

Golf Outing Reminder.

The annual parish golf outing will take place in Birr Golf club on Saturday 22nd August. This year’s captain is Denis Duffy (Jnr), and the President is Pauline Needham. Tee time from 9am. Time sheets available from Denis on (087) 7784666 or from Tony Coen on (087) 6219639.

Sympathy.

Sympathy is extended to Philip McGrath and family Lorrha on the death of his father Phil, Loughmore which occurred on August 8th. After funeral Mass in the Church of the Nativity of our Lady, Loughmore on Monday last, burial took place in the adjoining cemetery. May he rest in peace.  Sympathy is also extended to the extended Duggan family on the death of Denis, Nenagh  and formerly of The Ferry, who died on July 28th. After funeral Mass in St. John’s Church Tyone, burial took place in Lisbony New Cemetery. May he rest in peace.

Cancer Advice:

You are invited by Hayes & Hayes Pharmacy to get free advice on how to prevent cancer, information on spotting the early signs and any other queries you may have on Wednesday August 19th when the Marie Keating Mobile Unit visits the pharmacy with their nurse Phil. All welcome between 10.30am – 3.30pm.

Church News.

You are asked to note that there will be no vigil Mass in Redwood Church on Saturday 15th August. Usual Masses on Sunday, 16th August  –  i.e.  Lorrha at 10.00a.m. and Rathcabbin at 11.30a.m. Saturday, (15th August) Feast of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is a holyday of obligation.Mass in Lorrha at 10.00am and in Rathcabbin at 8.00pm.

Holycross Pilgrimage.

The annual Pilgrimage to Holycross will take place on Tuesday, 18th August. Please give names to Betty Houlihan – Tel: 087 6667374 as soon as possible.

Lourdes Pilgrimage.

The Autumn Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes will leave Shannon Airport on Sunday, Oct. 4th, returning on Friday, October 9th. Autumn De-Clutter.

Thinking of clearing out the wardrobe to make room for the Autumn collection? Lorrha Development/ Tidy Towns continue with unused clothes collection throughout the Summer months. De-clutter your wardrobe, attack your attic, recycle all unwanted/unused items of clothing to make room for your Autumn collection. Please note we cannot accept Duvets, bedding, household linen, Pillows and cushions, Carpets, rugs and mats (including bath, shower and toilet mats), Soiled or wet clothing. We appreciate your support. All money raised from all fundraising ventures is used for the ongoing work around Lorrha Village which helps to keep two adults employed.

Art  Exhibition.

Portumna’s Shorelines Arts Exhibition 2015 will run this year from 4th-26th September at The Gallery at The Workhouse. Local artists wishing to submit a piece are asked to bring it to the Workhouse on Monday 24th August from 6-7.30 pm. Further details from 086-3195603.

Visual Art at Shorelines 2015 *** Calling all ARTISTS ***

Once again, the Gallery at The Workhouse will be home to the Shorelines Art Exhibition for the month of September including the festival weekend September 17th-20th. Included in the exhibition will be the artwork from the local artists and members of Wolf Lorien’s weekly art classes in Portumna as well as guest professional artists.

If you are interested in exhibiting one of your works, please bring it to the Workhouse on Monday 24th August from 6-7.30 pm. Work submitted after this date may not be exhibited as space is limited. The cost is €5 to help towards the cost of displaying materials and insurance. Please, please make sure your work is ready for hanging – pictures should be framed and have a cord or wire at the back! If you wish to offer your piece for sale, please also decide on the price you want to ask in advance.  We greatly look forward to seeing your work and to a very successful exhibition that will show the wealth of talent there is within the area!

Lorrha GAA News.

Lotto: Our jackpot is now €5,500. Thank you for your continued support. You can play our lotto online at www.locallotto.ie where it is easy to play every week. Tickets are €2 each or three for €5.

Senior: Our championship campaign is in limbo as we await the progress of Killenaule and Eire Og Annacarty in their divisional championships. Killenaule will play Mullinahone in the South final while Eire Og Annacarty will play Knockavilla Kickhams in the West final. If one or both is successful, we will progress to the last 16, which won’t be played until late August at the earliest.

Junior Hurling: Lorrha defeated Shannon Rovers 1-21 to 1-4 in the third round of the championship in Ballinderry on Sunday afternoon with the goal coming from Ross O’Meara. It sets up a crucial game away to Ballina this Friday, 14th August at 7.15pm, where a win or a draw will see us through to the semi-finals. Regardless we are already through to the quarter finals.

Minor: The minor hurlers face Silvermines in Dolla this evening (Wednesday, 12th August) at 7.15pm in a crucial game where a win or draw would see us into the semi-finals. A defeat might still be enough if other results go our way.

Under 16: Lorrha/Shannon Rovers returned to action against Portroe on Monday evening in Moatfield on Monday; news next week. Next Monday, they are away to Ballina at 7pm as they remain on course to reach the semi-finals on Monday, 22nd August.

Under 14: Lorrha/Shannon Rovers will play Newport Gaels in the North ‘B’ semi-final in Moatfield on Thursday, 13th August at 7.30pm.
All Ireland Semi-Final Tickets: Orders for All Ireland semi-final tickets on 16th August through the club have closed. Tickets can still be purchased through www.tickets.ie, Centra or SuperValu.

Tipperary GAA Clubs Draw: The club didn’t have any winners in the August draw which took place last Saturday night. We ask all promoters to bring their accounts up to date.

Tipperary: Best of luck to Patrick Maher and the Tipperary senior and minor hurling teams in their All Ireland semi-finals at Croke Park this Sunday.

Blood Drive: Irish Blood.ie returns to the GAA Centre on Tuesday, 8thSeptember from 1pm to 11pm.

Social Dancing: continues on Friday night to the music of Glen Flynn. Dancing 9.30pm to 12.30am.
