Lorrha Students Participate in Ireland Most Acclaimed Youth Orchestras.

Pupils from Lorrha School will participate in this year’s Peace Proms concert which will take place in U.L. on Saturday 28th February. This major event is a wonderful occasion and a special day for the Lorrha students as Peace Proms is a choral education project for Primary Schools run by the Cross Border Orchestra of Ireland (CBOI). Peace Proms engages children and young people in music and enriches their lives through exceptional musical experiences and performances. Established in 1995 as a peace initiative it is now composed of 120 young people from all over Ireland – north and south. The CBOI is internationally recognised as one of Ireland’s flagship peace initiatives and has become one of the most acclaimed youth orchestras that Ireland has ever produced. News From Lorrha School.

Well done to our pupils who recently participated in the Borrisokane Credit Union quiz which was enjoyed by all. Our under 13 team consisted of Caoimhe Claffey, Caoimhe O’Meara, Tom Duggan, Colm Fogarty while our under 11 team was Lochlann McGrath, Sheena Claffey, Sarah Mannion, Lisa Duggan. Both teams put in a great performance on the night.

Sympathy.

Rathcabbin Players wish to extend sympathy to their director Brendan Dolan, Banagher on the death of his father Martin, Cuba Avenue, which occurred on Monday 9th February. After funeral Mass in St. Rynagh’s Church Banagher on Thursday 12th burial took place in the local cemetery. May he rest in peace.

Sympathy is extended to Emily Hogan and family Roden on the sudden death of her father Gerard (Cyril) Hackett Geashill which occurred on Wednesday Feb. 4th. After funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church Raheen, on Saturday 7th burial took place in the adjoining cemetery. May he rest in peace.

Church News.

Wednesday18th February is Ash Wednesday. Blessing and distribution of ashes in Lorrha Church at  9.30am.  Rathcabbin Church Mass at 7.30pm. Stations of the Cross will be prayed before all Masses during Lent. We would encourage you to come along twenty minutes before Mass to participate in this devotion.

Community/Lenten Walks

For the purpose of creating an opportunity for people to meet, interact and enjoy outdoor exercise, the Parish Pastoral Council/Liturgy Group has decided to organize community walks during the six weeks of Lent.  The first of these walks takes place next Sunday, 22nd Feb. Assembly point, Community Hall, Lorrha at 2.30pm. Everyone is welcome to come along and experience the benefits of getting together.  Refreshments will be served in the hall afterwards.

Best of luck to Caoimhe Kennedy and the Tipperary senior camogie squad who commence their league campaign with a home game against neighbours Offaly on Sunday 22nd in The Ragg Camogie pitch at 2.30pm. This will be an important game for Tipperary who are under new management. See preview on game elsewhere in this paper.

Rathcabbin N.S. Open Evening.

Rathcabbin N.S. open evening for new students and their parents for Sept 2015 will take place on Tuesday 24th of February at the school from 6pm to 8 pm. All welcome.

Lorrha Lads Star in Back to the 80’s.

Well done to Portumna Community School student’s and to the two parish lads, Michael Dolan and George Harding who had significant leading roles in the schools recent show  “Back to the 80’s”. The show was performed to packed halls on three occasions, receiving a standing ovation each time. Well done again lads.

Redwood N.S Open Evening.

Redwood N.S. open evening will take place on Thursday, 12th March 2015 from 6pm – 8pm. A fantastic opportunity to visit the school, speak to the teachers and view the extensive range of facilities available to students.  Come Along, all are welcome! *Please note* New opening times for September 2015 – School will open at 8.30am and all classes will start at 8.50 am and finish at 1.30pm(Junior classes) and 2.30pm for all other classes.

A Dream Has Come True

John and Aileen Duggan from Co. Meath along with their extended family in Lorrha wish to thank everyone who signed the online petition that helped John secure the vital drug Soliris that he needs. With this drug John can go on to lead a normal life, one without fear of what will happen next. Describing the announcement that the HSE would fund the drug as a “dream has come through”, Aileen says that they would “ never have got to this day without all of you who have been an amazing support and we thank you from the bottom of our hearts”. We all wish John the very best of luck in the future and are delighted with this success story, and the power of people.

Camogie Club.

Juniors Training continues every Wednesday at 7.30pm and Saturday at 6pm U-14, U-16 Training every Wednesday at 6pm and Saturday at 11am Registration Registration is now due for all players and can be paid this Wed or next Wed evening after training. Prices: U18’s – €20, Non players- €30, Students – €40, Adult players- €60, Family membership (2adults & 2children) €90.

Spring  De-Clutter.

Thinking of clearing out the wardrobe to make room for the Spring collection? Lorrha Development/ Tidy Towns continue with unused clothes collection throughout the Spring  months. De-clutter your wardrobe, attack your attic, recycle all unwanted/unused items of clothing to make room for your Spring collection. We appreciate your support. All money raised from all fundraising ventures is used for the ongoing work around Lorrha Village which helps to keep two adults employed.

Induction Day.

Portumna College of Further Education will host an Induction day on Fri 20th of Feb at 2pm for all interested in pursuing the recently publicised Level 5 Healthcare Support course incorporating Care Skills, Care of the Older Person etc. For all enquiries or to add your name to the list call 090-9741946.

Love Songs & Sonnets — Friday, Feb 20th at 8pm, Church of Ireland Portumna 

Join Portumna Arts Group and guests for a night of Love Songs and Sonnets to celebrate the love in the air that February brings. Participants include Matrimony Melodies, Ava Downey, Treenie Hogan-Canning, Dave Gradwell and Laura Browne with love sonnets from Shakespeare to Heaney read by local guests and writers. A varied mixed bag of entertainment guaranteed in Portumna’s Church of Ireland. Admission: €8

Poetry Reading

Following the “Love Songs & Sonnets” event,  Rhymes and Poems in Horan’s Bar on Friday Feb 20th from 9.30 pm. Join members of the Pen Pushers, The Maple Poets and friends from Baffle and Nenagh for a selection of poetry and rhyme and an odd song too. Bring a poem you like to read or write a new poem to celebrate February, St Valentine’s Day or Spring!

Energy Saving Grant Scheme.

Lorrha Rathcabbin Energy Team following the very successful completion of the 2014 Energy Saving retrofit grant scheme from SEAI are progressing the scheme for 2015. LRET with support from North Tipp Leader Partnership is now taking names of householders, community buildings and businesses to retrofit their premises in 2015. A 50% grant available for Community Buildings. 30% for households and businesses. Up to 100% if in receipt of fuel allowance or Family Income Supplement or on Job Seekers Allowance longer than 6 months and with children under 7 years of age. The Birr and Banagher branch of St Vincent de Paul would like to thank the parishioners in Lorrha, Rathcabbin and Redwood for donating all the food and gifts from your ‘Giving Tree’ to us here in Banagher and Birr.
