Sympathy.

Sympathy is extended to Denis Maher, Lorrha and family on the death of his brother Tony which took place on Monday January 29th in Texas. Tony who was 77 years old was a regular visitor to Lorrha and was well known locally. He celebrated both his 50th and 70th  birthday’s with his brother Denis and family and when he visited, he would stay for two or three month’s at a time. Starting life as a chef, he changed careers when he emigrated to the US almost 50 years ago, and trained as a carpenter, entering the construction industry.
His  remains will be cremated in the US with burial to take place at a later date in Beaupark, Slane, Co. Meath. A Mass will be celebrated for the repose of his soul at a later stage in Lorrha. May he rest in peace.

Late Pat Carroll.

The death took place on Sunday February 4th. of Pat Carroll, Ballyea, Rathcabbin.  Pat passed away peacefully after an illness borne with great courage and dignity, in the loving and tender care of the staff at Milford Care Centre Limerick.
Born on January 23rd 1960, Pat lived all his life in Ballyea.  He attended Redwood National School and Presentation College Birr. He left school at 15 and worked with his father in the marts in Birr, Portumna,  Sixmilebridge and Kilmihill Co Clare, often leaving in the early morning and returning home very late at night. He eventually chose to become a trainee forester, fulfilling his love of the outdoors.
Pat played hurling with Lorrha winning a North U16 medal with the club in 1976 and he played under-21 and junior with the club until his accident. He also ran cross country with the local St. Ruadhan's Athletic Club.
At the young age of just 21 - Pat's life changed and after he spent over a year in hospital and the National Rehabilitation Centre Dunlaoighre, Pat returned home to build a new life. He attended St Cronan's Association in Roscrea for over 30 years and was an  integral part of the Community there, organising quizzes, pool and darts tournaments, and was the editor of the quarterly newsletter. There he developed computer and gardening skills and developed a life long love of gardening eventually getting his own poly tunnel, providing neighbours and friends with vegetables and plants throughout the summer. He loved quizzes, crosswords , board games and played Scrabble on line. He loved sports especially hurling, rugby and snooker. He  never missed a Tipperary hurling match on television.  Despite the many obstacles Pat met in his life, he faced them all with great courage, a positive outlook, and a sharp sense of humour.
Predeceased by his loving parents Patsy and Celia, Pat will be fondly remembered and sadly missed by his loving family, sisters Mary, Ena, Sheila, Anne and Claire, his brother Tom, brothers in law, Mick, Mike and Mark, sister in law Wendy, nieces, nephews, grand niece, grand nephews, cousins, friends especially Val and Gerry, neighbours and the community at St Cronan's Association Roscrea to whom sympathy is offered.

Festive Appreciation Afternoon in Rathcabbin.

The day started with a lovely surprise during the set-up and preparation by Rathcabbin Tidy Towns for their Christmas Craft Fair. Vincent Corcoran arrived with a nod to our native and local craft in the form of a generous donation of turf. Great timing and lovely to be able to sell it locally on the day! This day included 13 craft tables to support crafters or all ages selling their produce and festive gifts. We’re happy to hear the positive feedback from craft tables on business level for them and the enjoyable day in general.  It’s great to support younger school pupils having their first experience of managing a table and selling their wares. It’s more than a craft fair and talent did shine. It’s a festive appreciation day where we give back locally and say thanks to all by bringing this event to life for Christmas season. We included a magician for the children this year and hosted a festive art competition for all three schools locally. Their artwork decorated the community hall on the day and many of them got to meet Santa too when he paid a visit that evening. We’d like to thank the main sponsors for our 19 raffle prizes on the day -  Mulrooney’s, Secret Essence, Bobby Mcloughlin, Pamela Kennedy, Keith Brady, In Your Prime and Ladies Day Boutique, Portumna, Hassetts of Banagher, Doherty’s Roscrea, Corrib Oil and the many beautiful donations received from locals that went into hampers and prizes we created for the day itself.  It’s been a great year of progress for Rathcabbin Tidy Towns. We look forward to our AGM shortly after taking decorations down in early 2024. We thank everyone who helped and supported Tidy Towns throughout 2023 and hope you enjoy a festive break! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all our club members. We look forward to getting back on the field in 2024.

Keep your child safe online this Christmas - MEP Colm Markey

Fine Gael’s Colm Markey is calling on parents to take proactive measures to keep their children safe online this Christmas.

The Midlands-North-West MEP said help is at hand for anyone struggling to keep pace with the rapidly evolving digital world.

MEP Markey highlighted the work of the Irish Safer Internet Centre - co-funded by EU - as the one-stop shop for information and advice.

He commented, “Cyberbullying, addiction, in-game spending and inappropriate material are some of the main issues that parents are bringing to the Irish Safer Internet Centre, which includes the ISPCC, the National Parents Council, Hotline.ie and Webwise.ie. With Christmas around the corner, now is the time for parents to be mindful of their children’s digital safety. By staying informed and taking proactive measures, we can create a safer space for our kids to enjoy the benefits of technology responsibly.”

“As a father of two young children, I’m aware of the challenges that parents face in navigating the online world, particular when it comes to online gaming. Whether it’s monitoring screen time, setting parental controls, or engaging in open and honest conversations, help is at hand for parents who might need support and guidance”, he continued.

Markey said the Irish Safer Internet Centre has some useful tips for keeping children safe online over the festive season.

“It’s important to do your research when purchasing a new device, game or app. Familiarise yourself with how it works and whether it’s appropriate for them to play. Explore the safety and privacy settings and find out how to enable any parental controls. When it comes to screen time, striking a healthy balance is key. Agree clear rules and set a good example. It’s also important to have open and regular dialogue. Ensure your child knows they can come to you if they see something that upsets them. Above all, parents should be aware that expert advice is available through the Irish Safer Internet Centre”, he concluded.
