Closure Of Bogs To Go Ahead.

It now seems likely that despite promises to reverse the decision made by the previous Government to close 32 special areas of Conservation which will affect those who cut turf to heat their houses the present Government elected a Peatland’s Council last Thursday April 7th. to deal with the closure of bogs around the Country. The aim of the Peatland Council is to look at developing codes of practice to managing how the European Directive is implemented. However it will not challenge the law banning cutting turf on 32 Special Areas of Conservation including bogs in Tipperary and Offaly. The Peatlands Council has been tasked with advising the Government on a number of key actions including how the law can be enforced in a humane way. Its Chairman is former Bord na Mona director Conor Skeehan who says getting agreement between all stakeholders involved with the ban on turf cutting will be a major challenge. Speaking in a press release last Friday he admits his remit is to ultimately examine how the law is enforced in a way that takes account of the realities facing those affected. However turf cutters are enraged over the continued enforcement of the ban and say the move will not be accepted nor will they co-operate with the new Independent body. The Minister for Arts Heritage and the Gaeltacht Mr. Jimmy Deenihan T.D. said “It is clear to us that the decision of the last Government to bring an effective end to turf-cutting on 31 raised bog SACs from 2010 and on a further 24 SACs from the end of this year must be implemented” Following the decision to establish the Peatlands Council the Government will make further announcements in the coming days in relation to the compensation package which is being put in place. Is this the first U turn the new Government has made??
