Smile Awhile.

Bill and his wife Blanche go to the county fair every year, and every year Bill would say,

" Blanche, I'd like to ride in that helicopter "

Blanche always replied,

" I know Bill, but that helicopter ride is seventy quid, and seventy quid is seventy quid! "

One year later Bill and Blanche went to the fair, and Bill said,

" Blanche, I'm 75 years old. If I don't ride that helicopter, I might never get another chance "
To this, Blanche replied,

" Bill that helicopter ride is seventy quid , and seventy quid is seventy quid "

The pilot overheard the couple and said,

" Folks I'll make you a deal. I'll take the both of you for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and don't say a word I won't charge you a penny!

But if you say one word it's seventy quid. "

Bill and Blanche agreed and up they went.

The pilot did all kinds of fancy maneuvers, but not a word was heard.

He did his daredevil tricks over and over again, but still not a word...

When they landed, the pilot turned to Bill and said,

" By golly, I did everything I could to get you to yell out, but you didn't.

I'm impressed! " Bill replied, " Well, to tell you the truth

I almost said something when Blanche fell out,

But you know, seventy quid is seventy quid! "

Smile Awhile.

One day God was looking down at Earth and saw all of the rascally behavior that was going on. So he called one of his angels and sent the angel to Earth for a time.

When he returned, he told God, 'Yes, it is bad on Earth; 95% are misbehaving and only 5% are not.

God thought for a moment and said, 'Maybe I had better send down a second angel to get another opinion.'

So God called another angel and sent him to Earth for a time.

When the angel returned he went to God and said, 'Yes, it's true. The Earth is in decline; 95% are misbehaving, but 5% are being good.'

God was not pleased. So he decided to e-mail the 5% that were good, because he wanted to encourage them, and give them a little something to help them keep going.

Do you know what the e-mail said?
I was just wondering, 'cause I didn't get one either.

Smile Awhile.

Jim stood over his tee shot on the 450 yard 18th hole for what seemed an eternity. He waggled, looked up, looked down, waggled again, but didn't start his back swing.

Finally his exasperated partner asked, 'What the hell is taking so long?'

'My wife is watching from the clubhouse balcony,' Jim explained. 'I want to make a perfect shot.'

Oh come on man, his companion said, 'You don't have a chance in hell of hitting her from here!'

Smile Awhile.

A man was riding his Harley along a California beach, when suddenly the sky cleared above his head and in a booming voice, the Lord said,
'Because you have tried to be faithful to me in all ways, I will grant you one wish.' The biker pulled over and said,
'Build a bridge to Hawaii so I can ride over anytime I want.'
The Lord said, 'Your request is materialistic. Think of the enormous challenges for that kind of undertaking; the supports required reaching the bottom of the Pacific and the concrete and steel it would take! It will nearly exhaust several natural resources. I can do it, but it is hard for me to justify your desire for worldly things. Take a little more time and think of something that could possibly help mankind.'
The biker thought about it for a long time. Finally, he said, 'Lord, I wish that I and all men could understand women; I want to know how she feels inside, what she's thinking when she gives me the silent treatment, why she cries, what she means when she says nothing's wrong, why she snaps and complains when I try to help, and how I can make a woman truly happy.'

The Lord replied, 'You want two lanes or four lanes on that bridge?'

Winds will be moderate to fresh to start, but will slacken a little in the south and back southwesterly during the day.

Tonight

Temperatures will continue to fall through the evening and night and a slight frost will develop towards dawn on Thursday. Frost is most likely in the north and northeast and should only affect areas sheltered from the wind, which is expected to veer westerly again and freshen overnight. Smile Awhile.

Paddy McCoy, an elderly Irish farmer, received a letter from the Department for Work & Pensions stating that they suspected he was not paying his employees the statutory minimum wage and they would send an inspector to interview them.

On the appointed day, the inspector turned up.
"Tell me about your staff," he asked Paddy.
"Well," said Paddy, "there's the farm hand, I pay him 340 euro a week, and he has a free cottage.
Then there's the housekeeper. She gets 390 euro a week, along with free board and lodging.
There's also the half-wit. He works a 16 hour day, does 90% of the work, earns about 25 euroa week along with a bottle of whisky and, as a special treat, occasionally gets to sleep with my wife."

"That's disgraceful" said the inspector, "I need to interview the half-wit."

"That'll be me then," said Paddy.

Late Eileen Tooher.

The death took place on Tuesday January 3rd in Nenagh General Hospital of Eileen Tooher, Ballyoughter, Rathcabbin. Eileen who was 77 years old, hadn’t enjoyed good health for some years, yet she kept active, out and about making the best of everyday that came so news of her passing caused widespread regret in the parish. Nee Felle, she was born into a family of ten in Tynagh, Co.Galway. On her marriage to Tom 46 years ago, they lived in Carrig for a number of years before moving to Rathcabbin where they both worked hard to build up their farm and where Eileen became immersed in community life. She took an interest in everything that was happening in the parish and was well known and respected for the many years she spent as a member of the local I.C.A. group and the Altar Society of the local Church. She made all callers to her home feel welcome where over the cup of tea and the home made baking, Eileen recalled days of yesteryear. Like so many of her generation, her religion was an important part of everyday life and she lived it to its fullest. A sincere and genuine lady who was much loved by many she will be sadly missed by all who knew her but in particular by her family.
Sympathy is extended to her husband Tom, son Gary and his wife Marian, grandchildren Meriel and Gmlym, brothers Martin (Tynagh), Sonny (Thurles), sisters Mary Ann (Tynagh), Nuala (Meath), Teresa (Dublin), Claire (London), nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. After concelebrated funeral Mass with Fr. Pat Mulcahy P.P. and Fr. John Donnelly A.P. in Our Lady Queen of Ireland Church Rathcabbin on Friday 6th. burial took place in Carrig Cemetery. May she rest in peace.

Reminder.

Seamus King is writing an article on the Parsonstown and Portumna Bridge Railway, better known as the ‘Stolen Railway’ which ran between Birr and the Ferry between1868 and 1878. It was never a success, closed down in the latter year, was policed for a number of years, then abandoned and ‘stolen’.The general facts are well known but he is interested in any folklore on the subject. The building must have been the biggest engineering feat ever undertaken in the parish and must have given much needed employment. Landowners along the line must have
been compensated. The opening of the line and the first train in 1868 must have been a
major parish event. And, yet, there are few stories about it.
The stealing of the railway after its closure ensured that parts of it are to be found on many farms in the parish. The railway tracks were used for hanging gates.
If anyone has stories, relevant pictures, documents, etc about the railway he would like to hear from you. His contact details are: 062-61307, 087-2246245 or seamusjk@eircom.net

Well Done.

The Stolen Railway.

Seamus King is writing an article on the Parsonstown and Portumna Bridge Railway, better known as the ‘Stolen Railway’ which ran between Birr and the Ferry between1868 and 1878. It was never a success, closed down in the latter year, was policed for a number of years, then abandoned and ‘stolen’.
The general facts are well known but he is interested in any folklore on the subject.
The building must have been the biggest engineering feat ever undertaken in the parish and must have given much needed employment. Landowners along the line must have been compensated. The opening of the line and the first train in 1868 must have been a major parish event.

Smile Awhile.

Two nuns, Sister Catherine and Sister Helen, are travelling through
Europe in their car.

They get to Transylvania and are stopped at a traffic light.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a tiny little Dracula jumps onto the hood of
the car and hisses through the windshield.

"Quick, quick!" shouts Sister Catherine. "What shall we do?"

"Turn the windshield wipers on.

That will get rid of the abomination," says Sister Helen.

Sister Catherine switches them on, knocking Dracula about, but he
clings on and continues hissing at the nuns.

"What shall I do now?" she shouts.

"Switch on the windshield washer. I filled it up with Holy Water at
the Vatican ," says Sister Helen.
Sister Catherine turns on the windshield washer.

Dracula screams as the water burns his skin, but he clings on and
continues hissing at the nuns.

"Now what?" shouts Sister Catherine.

"Show him your cross," says Sister Helen.

"Now you're talking," says Sister Catherine..

She opens the window and shouts,

"Get the f… off the car!"

Many thanks to all of you for sending on jokes for inclusion in the weekly “Smile Awhile” slot. These jokes have proved very popular with all our readers both at home and abroad judging on the amount of emails received. Do keep them coming and we will continue to publish one each week but please, do remember to keep them clean. Thank You.

Smile Awhile.

Proudly showing off his newly-leased downtown apartment to a couple of friends late one night , a drunk guy led the way to his bedroom where there was a big brass gong hanging on the wall .

'What's that big brass gong for?' one of the friends asked.
'Issss nod a gong. Issss a talking Irish clock' he drunkenly replied.
'A talking Irish clock seriously?'

'Yup.' 'Hmmm (hic).'

'How's it work?' the second friend asked, squinting at it.

'Just watch' he said.

He picked up a hammer, gave the gong an 'ear-shattering bash' and stepped back.

His three mates stood looking at one another for a moment in astounded silence.

Suddenly, an Irish voice from the other side of the wall screamed,

'For F……………. sake, you stupid B………………… It's ten past three in the F ……………….. morning!!!'

Smile Awhile.

An Airline Attendant in Sydney some months ago was both smart and funny, while making her point, when confronted with a passenger who probably deserved to fly as cargo.
A crowded Virgin flight was cancelled after Virgin's 767s had been withdrawn from service. A single attendant was re-booking a long line of inconvenienced travellers. Suddenly an angry passenger pushed his way to the desk. He slapped his ticket down on the counter and said,
"I HAVE to be on this flight and it HAS to be FIRST CLASS".

The attendant replied, "I'm sorry, sir. I'll be happy to try to help you, but I've got to help these people first, and I'm sure we'll be able to work something out.."

The passenger was unimpressed. He asked loudly, so that the passengers behind him could hear,"DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHO I AM?"

Without hesitating, the attendant smiled and grabbed her public address microphone:"May I have your attention please, may I have your attention please,"she began - her voice heard clearly throughout the terminal.
"We have a passenger here at Desk 14 WHO DOES NOT KNOW WHO HE IS. If anyone can help him find his identity, please come to Desk 14."

With the folks behind him in line laughing hysterically, the man glared at the Virgin attendant, gritted his teeth and said,"F... You!"
Without flinching, she smiled and said, "I'm sorry, sir, but you'll have to get in line for that too."

5 Day Weather Forecast.

Today Tuesday 13th Dec.

Stormy conditions will ease tonight. Very cold with falls of rain, sleet and wet snow in some northern areas, occasional wintry showers elsewhere, some of snow mostly on higher ground. Becoming mostly dry in the midlands and east for a time but later tonight the danger of wintry showers returns. Overnight lows of +1 to or -1 with frost and icy stretches likely.

Tomorrow

Cold tomorrow with bright spells and scattered wintry showers through Connaught and Ulster, but some more prolonged rain in parts of Munster and Leinster during the day with some of sleet or snow for a time in the morning. Top afternoon temperatures of 3 to 7 degrees highest in the southwest.

Outlook

Wednesday night will be bitterly cold with temperatures between zero and minus 3 degrees leading to some frost and icy patches. There will be clear spells and some wintry showers, mainly in the North and West. There's also the risk of some sleety rain or snow and strong winds in the far Southwest and South for a time early in the night. Thursday will start off largely dry, bright and cold. Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are expected to move up from the South during the day, though Ulster may stay mainly dry. There is also the risk of very windy or stormy conditions developing especially in Southern and Midland areas, though there is a chance that the storm may pass to the South and miss us. Friday looks to be very cold and blustery with strong and gusty west to northwest winds. There will be sunshine and occasional wintry showers with falls of sleet and snow, most frequent in the North and West. The cold and blustery North to Northwesterly airflow looks like persisting for Saturday with further wintry showers and frost and icy patches at night.

Smile Awhile.

The Banking Crisis simply explained...

Young Paddy bought a donkey from a farmer for 100 euro. The farmer agreed to deliver the donkey the next day..
The next day he drove up and said, 'Sorry son, but I have some bad news. The donkey died.'
Paddy replied, 'Well then just give me my money back.' The farmer said, 'Can't do that. I've already spent it.'
Paddy said, 'OK, then, just bring me the dead donkey.' The farmer asked, 'What are you going to do with him?'
Paddy said, 'I'm going to raffle him off.' The farmer said, 'You can't raffle a dead donkey!'
Paddy said, 'Sure I can. Watch me.. I just won't tell anybody he's dead.'
A month later, the farmer met up with Paddy and asked, 'What happened with that dead donkey?'
Paddy said, 'I raffled him off. I sold 500 tickets at two euro a piece and made a profit of 998 euro.
The farmer said, 'Didn't anyone complain?' Paddy said, 'Just the guy who won. So I gave him his two euro back.'

Paddy now works for the Royal Bank of Scotland

Late Kitty Maher.

The peaceful death took place on Thursday December 1st of Catherine Maher, Gurteen, Rathcabbin. Nee Reddin, Kitty as she was known to all, enjoyed a long and healthy life in the company of her family and friends and had she lived she would have celebrated her 97th birthday in January.
A popular and well liked lady, she was a quiet and pleasant individual who took pride in her family and in each of her grandchildren. Indeed she rarely missed a match whether it be Lorrha or Tipperary when her grandsons Bonner, Willie, Jack or Kevin were playing and she continued to attend the games until recent times. Kitty loved to get out and about and to meet and chat with everyone and she indeed met many when she attended the annual senior citizens Christmas dinner in Motefield down through the years.
She will be sadly missed from the parish by all but in particular by her family to whom sympathy is offered. Predeceased by her husband Paddy she is survived by Timmy, Margaret, Derry, Cathy, Ita, PJ, Eamon, Helen, Martina, John, grand-children, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, extended family, neighbours and friends. After funeral Mass in Our Lady Queen of Ireland Church Rathcabbin on Saturday 3rd burial took place in Bonaham cemetery Rathcabbin. May she rest in peace.

Late Maureen Deely.

The peaceful death took place on Friday December 2nd of Maureen Deely, Lisgreen, Lorrha. Nee O’Meara, she was just a few weeks short of celebrating her 90th birthday. Maureen was a quiet and well loved member of the community. Like so many of her generation, she worked the land with her late husband John and in her spare time she loved to read, paint and cook and was actively involved with the ICA when a club existed in the parish. She liked to mix and chat others and the local active retirement group provided that outlet for her whenever she attended their meetings. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her but in particular by her family.
Sympathy is extended to her sons Seamus and Tommy, daughter Mary, brother Michael, son in-law, daughter in-law, grandchildren, brother in-law, sisters in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends. After funeral Mass in Our Lady Queen of Ireland Church Rathcabbin on Sunday 4th burial took place in Bonoham Cemetery Rathcabbin. May she rest in peace.

Late Mary Ann Hogan.

The sudden and unexpected death occurred at her residence on Saturday December 3rd of Mary Ann Hogan, Derry, Rathcabbin. Nee O’Meara and in her 89th year, Mary Ann had just returned to her home having spent some time in hospital but her death came as a shock to her family. She liked the outdoor life and kept a lovely flower garden at her home in Derry. An avid reader with particular interest in the daily newspaper, Irelands Own, Womans Way, The Sacred Heart Messenger and the Columban “Africa” magazine, she enjoyed the company of neighbours and friends to her home for the chat and the cup of tea and was also involved in the local branch of the ICA in the parish.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew her but in particular by her husband of 58 years Billy, sons Willie (Rathcabbin), James (Tullamore), daughters Mary (Clonlara), Bridget (Lorrha), Freddie (Galway), brothers Sean (Rathcabbin), Liam, Tom (Lorrha) Flan (Limerick), sisters Brigie and Freda (Birr), grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours and friends to whom sympathy is extended. After funeral Mass in Our Lady Queen of Ireland Church Rathcabbin on Monday 5th Dec. burial took place in Lorrha Cemetery. May she rest in peace.

A youth Christmas Retreat with be held in Newbridge College, Co. Kildare from Friday 16th to Sunday 18th December 2011. Free buses available and all are welcome. For more information log onto www.youth2000.ie or call 01 6753690 or 085 8289231.

Reminder.

A reminder that a “Giving Tree” is in each of our three Churches in the parish to give people the opportunity to contribute to the less well off. These trees we have decorated with leaves, on each leaf there is written a suggested gift that you might contribute. The idea is you take one or more leaves each week between now and the end of Advent and make the contribution it suggests on the back of the leaf. You can place your gift in the basket provided. Many families approach Christmas with dread and by your contribution you are bringing the joy of the festive season to homes that would otherwise have to go without. All contributions will be donated to our local St Vincent De Paul Society and/or the Lions Club.

Gratitude.

Lorrha Development Association would like to thank all who contributed in what ever way to the success of the Christmas Market and Auction on Sunday last. Thanks to all who sponsored items to both the market and the auction and to everyone who helped on the day. All money raised goes back into the upkeep of the village.

Active Retirement.

On Sunday November 27th members of the group travelled by bus to the beautiful Woodlands Hotel in Adare to the Mid Western Region Christmas dinner. We enjoyed a delicious 4 course lunch followed by lively music with Pat and Richie. There was great entertainment from members of the various areas. The atmosphere was a Christmas theme with sparkling lights and the enormous Christmas tree. An enjoyable day was had by all thanks to the work and dedication of the organisers including our own Nancy and the staff and management of the Hotel. New members welcome any Wednesday from 2.30 onwards in the village hall.

REPLACEMENT WINDOWS

Last year my neighbour who happens to be a blonde, replaced all the windows in her house with those expensive, double-glazed, energy-efficient kind.
Today, she got a call from the contractor who installed them. He complained that the work had been completed a year ago and she still hadn't paid for them.
She told me  “Hellloooo,............just because I'm blonde doesn't mean that I am automatically stupid so, I told him just what his fast-talking sales guy told me last year... that these windows would pay for themselves in a year,,,”
“Helllooooo? It's been a year, so they're paid for, she told him..
There was only silence at the other end of the line, so she finally hung up. He never called back. Bet he felt like an idiot she said......

The Giving Tree.

This Advent in our community we have placed a “Giving Tree” in each of our three Churches to give people the opportunity to contribute to the less well off. These trees we have decorated with leaves, on each leaf there is written a suggested gift that you might contribute. The idea is: you take one or more leaves each week between now and the end of Advent and make the contribution it suggests on the back of the leaf. You can place your gift in the basket provided. Many families approach Christmas with dread and by your contribution you are bringing the joy of the festive season to homes that would otherwise have to go without. All contributions will be donated to our local St Vincent De Paul Society and/or the Lions Club.

Smile Awhile.

A lawyer and a senior citizen are sitting next to each other on a long flight. The lawyer is thinking that seniors are so dumb that he could get one over on them easy, so the lawyer asked if the senior would like to play a fun game. The senior is tired, so he politely declined and tried to catch a few winks. The lawyer persisted, saying that the game is a lot of fun. “I will ask you a question, and if you don't know the answer, you pay me only 5 euro. Then you ask me one, and if I don't know the answer, I will pay you 500 euro,” he said. This caught the senior's attention and, to keep the lawyer quiet, he agreed to play the game. The lawyer asked the first question.

“What's the distance from the Earth to the Moon?”

The senior doesn't say a word, but reached into his pocket, pulled out a five euro note and handed it to the lawyer. Now it's the senior's turn. He asked the lawyer,

“What goes up a hill with three legs, and comes down with four?”

The lawyer used his laptop and searched all references he can find on the Net. He sent e-mails to all of his smart friends; all to no avail. After an hour of searching, he finally gave up.
He woke the senior and handed him 500 euro. The senior pocketed the 500 euro and went right back to sleep. The lawyer is going nuts not knowing the answer. He woke the senior up and asked, “'Well, so what goes up a hill with three legs and comes down with four?”
The senior reached into his pocket, handed the lawyer 5 euro and went back to sleep..
