Late Nicholas McGuinness.

The peaceful death occurred at his residence of Nicholas McGuinness Carrigahorig, on Sunday 24th January 2016. Born Claus Mielke in Poland 74 years ago, Nicholas changed his name and became an Irish citizen in the 1970’s.  Coming on holiday to Ireland in early 1960, he fell in love with the country, its people and the fishing and returned to live in Dublin in 1965. His wife Monique, who hails from Paris, followed the following year and they spent twelve lovely years in Dublin where Nicholas formed his own jazz band and was in big demand around the city.  A neighbour of the late Barney McKenna and of Ronnie Drew, Nicholas also played banjo and joined in on vocals too with The Dubliners for many years forming a lasting friendship with the members of the band. So much so was that lasting bond that the last remaining band member John Sheahan attended the funeral and partook in the church music. Ronnie Drew’s daughter was also in attendance. In 1978, he and his family moved to Carrigahorig and opened a restaurant “The Tuning Fork” which over a period of some years became a very popular eating and entertainment venue in the area. Nicholas was known and loved for miles around in the local pubs for his music be it fiddle or banjo or trombone that he played. He became ill two years ago and was cared for by his wife Monique in their home where they celebrated their 49th wedding anniversary just three days before he passed away. Nicholas will be fondly remembered by many and sadly missed by all who knew him, but in particular by his family. Sympathy is extended to Monique, daughter Sonia, son-in-law Wolfgang, grandchildren Cecile and Thomas. After funeral Mass in Terryglass Church on Tuesday 26th January, burial took place in the adjoining cemetery. May he rest in peace.
