VSO Ireland improving girls’ education in Uganda

Educating girls is often not seen as a priority in Karamoja, one of poorest and least developed regions in Uganda. In one district, only 6.4% of girls finish primary school at all. VSO Ireland has launched a new development programme to help more Ugandan girls go to school and address societal norms preventing them from getting the education they deserve. This project will be implemented by skilled Irish and Ugandan volunteers, and is being funded by Irish Aid, the Government’s official overseas aid programme which works on behalf of Irish people to address poverty and inequality around the world.

VSO Ireland has already delivered a successful inclusive education programme in Karamoja, which increased literacy rates by 20% and numeracy outcomes by 10%. As this programme progressed, the need to have a greater focus on girls’ education emerged. Girls are not granted the same opportunities as boys for a number of reasons, primarily because they can bring their families more money through work or their “bride price”. VSO Ireland’s new programme will take into account the reasons why girls drop out of school or do not attend school in the first place, such as child marriage. VSO volunteers will work with local teachers and community groups to build their capacity, improve health and hygiene practices in schools, and remove stigma around girls finishing primary education.

Lisa Barrins, a teacher from St Aidan’s National School, Co. Sligo, and Breda Dunleavy, who works in St Patrick’s Loreto Primary School, Co. Wicklow, both departed for Karamoja this week to commence their VSO placements. Over the next year, they will work with the District Education Officers in Kotido and Moroto, mentoring school leaders on inclusive education practices and helping them to develop education strategies that address the challenges affecting girls’ education. They will also collaborate with local community groups to reduce negative attitudes towards educating marginalised groups, not just girls but also children with disabilities and orphans.

Lisa, who has already volunteered on education projects in Ghana, South Africa, Rwanda and Uganda, looks forward to embracing the new challenges this volunteer placement will bring. She said, “I’m delighted to be involved in this Irish Aid project where I’ll be working and living amongst the local Karamojong people in Moroto.” Breda is similarly excited to put her wealth of education experience to the test. “I am looking forward to meeting the teachers in the local schools and sharing ideas and experiences together to further the educational experience of all the children in the Karamoja region,” she commented.

Kate O’Donnell, VSO Ireland’s Head of Country Office, participated in the girls' education programme launch in Uganda last month. She said, “We would like to thank Irish Aid and the Irish public for supporting their long-term support of our work in Uganda. We’ve run programmes in this region for several years now and have built up the expertise required to support sustainable change and help more girls go to school. We’re really excited to see the progress that Lisa and Breda will make on their placements in the coming year.”

Powerful Telescope Launched in Birr

Minister of State for Training, Skills, Innovation, Research and Development John Halligan officially turned on a  powerful new radio telescope that covers the size of a football pitch,  in the grounds of Birr Castle last Thursday July 27th  the 12th station in the network. This is a very important development for the home of the telescope, Birr Castle.
I-LOFAR is the Irish contribution to a €150m European-wide network of telescopes that combine to form one of the most sophisticated in the world. The telescopes can observe the universe in unprecedented detail through low frequency radio waves. LOFAR is one of the largest astrophysics projects in Europe, with 11 international stations spread across Germany, Poland, France, the UK and Sweden, with additional stations and a central hub in the Netherlands.  It is expected that the new science centre that will be undertaken in Birr in the near future will create 20 jobs when complete.
It has been constructed adjacent to the historic Leviathan telescope, which was built by the 3rd Earl of Rosse in 1845 and was the largest optical telescope in the world until 1917.
I-LOFAR will be run by Irish astrophysicists, computer engineers and data scientists, representing Irish universities and institutes of technologies from both sides of the border.
The team will be led by Trinity College Dublin, with partners from University College Dublin, Dublin City University, Athlone Institute of Technology, the National University of Ireland Galway, University College Cork, the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies and Armagh Observatory & Planetarium.

Restaurants Association of Ireland Urges Government to Retain 9% VAT Rate

Tuesday 11th July 2017

  • VAT rate must remain at 9%, the correct rate for Ireland in order to continue growth and recovery of the hospitality sector.
  • Since its introduction in 2011, 33,600 direct jobs and 15,456 indirect jobs have been created.
  • Extra attention must be paid in the wake of the Brexit vote.
  • The sector accounted for 7.2% of total employment in the economy at the end of 2016.

The Restaurants Association of Ireland today is urging the Government to retain the 9% VAT rate for the tourism and hospitality industry. The reduction in the VAT rate to 9% has improved the competitiveness of the Accommodation and Food Services sector since it was introduced, and has also helped ensure the viability of many businesses that have been going through challenging times. The RAI is asking Minister for Finance & Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe T.D not to return the VAT rate to 13.5%.
Chief Executive of the RAI Adrian Cummins said “17 out of 19 Eurozone countries have a VAT rate of below 10%. A 9% VAT rate in Ireland is not only the correct rate for our country, but it is also in line with the rest of Europe. We need this VAT rate particularly now as Brexit negotiations begin, to remain competitive”. Both Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport Shane Ross T.D. and Minister of State for Transport, Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin T.D. have expressed that 9% VAT should remain. Mr. Cummins continued “Against this background of intense uncertainty for the Irish economy in general and the Accommodation & Food Services sector in particular, it does not make sense to increase the VAT rate, given the extra vulnerability that has arisen from the Brexit vote”.
While some parts of the sector are now experiencing improved trading conditions in line with the economic recovery, it is not universal and many businesses are still under significant pressure. As highlighted by the RAI last month, there is a significant shortage of trained workers in the industry, raising the VAT rate will put a further strain on business owners who are already struggling.
Since the introduction of VAT at 9% in 2011, 33,600 direct jobs have been created in the industry. The taxes accruing to the Exchequer from this employment totaled €160 million by the end of 2016. Indirect employment created in the sector since the introduction of the vat rate is estimated at 15,456 bringing the total number of jobs created to approximately 49,056.
From an Irish economic and political perspective, there is much to worry about in relation to Brexit. Sterling has lost 23% of its value against the euro since November 2015, and has shed 11% since the Brexit vote. This currency move will damage the competitiveness of Irish exports to the UK and will make Ireland a lot less attractive for UK tourists. It is estimated that for every 1% that UK activity declines, Irish economic growth would decline by about 0.3%. The Accommodation & Food Services Sector would clearly be very vulnerable to a UK recession and ongoing sterling weakness and vulnerability, especially if the 9% VAT rate is not retained. Ireland must remain an attractive destination to tourists, particularly those from the UK.
Continuing VAT at 9% into 2018 is crucial, not only to the sustainability of restaurants and businesses in the tourism sector, but also to job creation and regrowth for our economy. The RAI are adamant that Minister for Finance & Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe T.D must recognize this and make a distinct effort to retain the 9% VAT rate.

Smile Awhile & Laugh A Lot!

Three girls, a blonde, a brunette and a red head were all chased by a farmer.  The brunette hid in a dog house, the red head in a cat house and the blonde in a sack of potatoes. The farmer came along and he kicked the dog house and the brunette barked. He kicked the cat house and the red head meowed. He kicked the sack of potatoes and the blonde went “Potatoe”, “potatoe”.....

Thanks Brian for that.

IRELAND’S LUCKIEST MAN PAYS HIS THIRD VISIT TO NATIONAL LOTTERY WINNERS ROOM!

A Munster bachelor is claiming to be Ireland’s luckiest man after he paid his third visit in 13 years to the coveted National Lottery Winners room today.

And the delighted player, who left the building with a cheque for almost €20,000, joked with National Lottery staff: “You will be getting sick of me. Hope to see you again soon!”

The gob smacked football fan said he always believed he would get back to the Winners Room – despite previous luck which saw him win €300,000 on Lotto Plus 1 in 2004 and €500,000 as part of a Lotto syndicate in 2006.

“I always play EuroMillions and I bought my ticket as normal for the EuroMillions Draw on May 30th. I really couldn’t believe it when I saw 5 numbers came up! I know it’s not a life changing amount but it is still nice and will allow me do some things.”

The winner said his previous big wins did not change him or his lifestyle in any dramatic way. “I paid for my house and I was able to help out family which was great. I also got to do lots of travel, something I hadn’t had an opportunity to do up to then. I have had a good time.”

The player, who did not want to go public, is working in Munster. “I don’t know yet how I will spend this win but first I will go for a pint in Dublin and take a few days off. This win shows that lightening can strike not once, not twice, but three times!”

He added: “I am not ruling out winning again. I have already bought my EuroMillions ticket for tonight. The Jackpot is worth €60 million so hope to see you again in the morning!”

A close friend who accompanied him to the winner’s room said he was a wonderful person and his good fortune had not changed him. “He is the same person. But it is unbelievable that he has won three times. When he called me to tell me I thought he was kidding. What are the chances of this happening anyone? I am thrilled for him it couldn’t happen to a nicer guy.”

The winning EuroMillions Match 5 ticket worth €19,912 was purchased in Supervalu on Main St, Ballincollig, Cork.

National Lottery Chief Executive, Dermot Griffin, today congratulated the three-time winner. “We have had people coming through here twice but to have someone in our Winners Room three times is something else. We are delighted for this player. It just shows dreams do come true - more than once.”

He reminded players that thirty per cent of all National Lottery revenues go back to Good Causes all over Ireland in the areas of health, sport, education, arts and heritage.
