Tracing Relations.

Patrick Hogan is trying to trace his relations. His Great-great Grandfather was Michael Hogan (b. 1829- d. 1915) who was married to Mary Kilkeary and they had six children Patrick (my great grandfather)
Peter, Bridget, John, Michael and Mary. He lived in Lorrha where Patrick visited in July 2015. He does have a lot of information gathered already as listed below.  If you think you can help Patrick he can be contacted at:  Estrada de Seac Pai Van, One Oasis – Pena Tower 2, 30E, Coloane, Macau or his father in the US can be contacted at: James E Hogan, 612 Hood Blvd, Fairless Hills, PA 19030.

Tracing Relations.

Rebecca Wallace is conducting a genealogy research on her family from the Tipperary region and she is wondering if there is anyone in Lorrha Parish that can help her. She is the 3rd great granddaughter of Mary Madden, daughter of William and Catherine Madden. Mary was born in Tipperary in 1857, married to John T. Garraty of Philadelphia, and died in Philadelphia in 1897.
John T. Garraty was the son of James Garraty (may be spelled Geraughty or Geraghty) who was born in Tipperary in 1819. James immigrated to Canada in 1848 and subsequently to the U.S., residing in New York and Pennsylvania.
Rebecca found some records which might pertain to her ancestors. One of these is an Estate Record for an Edward Geraghty who held land in the parish of Modreeny and James Geraghty who held land in the parish of Uskane. A military service record for William Madden included the following information: Calculated year of birth: 1837, Parish of birth: Lorrha, Town of birth: Portumna, County of birth Tipperary. Age at attestation: 18 years 4 months, Discharge date: 24 September 1855, Discharge rank: Private, Discharge corps: 21st Foot, Discharge soldier number: 4300. Finally, an Estate Record for Knigh lists a William Madden born in 1831 in the Nenagh and Knigh Parish. If you can help Rebecca please contact her at: Rebecca Wallace, 22 N. Llanwellyn Ave. Glenolden, PA 19036 USA, or by email at thegarratys@gmail.com

To the Heritage Festival committee: I live in Perth, Western Australia, very near Martin O'Meara's significant places. I am interested in Martin and the forthcoming festival and thought, living here, I may be able to assist in some small way. If so, please feel free to contact me.

re #77 Richie O'Meara from Queenstown NZ I;m wondering if there is a connection to Martin O'Meara from Lorrha who emigrated to Perth, Western Australia and served in the AIF in WW1. He won the Victoria Cross at Pozieres. He left a very interesting will. I am not related, but have ancestors Disney- Eyre and Daly from this vicinity and hope to visit one day.
I enjoy reading this website very much!
Regards,
Leith

I tried to reply to David Shakesphere but the e-mail bounced back. This was my message: I read your message on the Lorrah site and took not that you are interested
in the Hoctor family. My great great great grandmother Sarah Hoctor was
baptised in Lorrha in 1836. Her parents John and Mary (nee Molloy)
immigrated to Australia and eventually settled in Mt Franklin near
Daylesford Victoria. Sarah married Charles Norton Dyett in 1857. She reared
7 children before her death in 1875. Tragically she lost one child Frederick
due to a kitchen accident. My Great Great Grandfather was subsequently named
after this child. I will be visiting Lorrha in June and I hope to find some
links. If you have any information about the Hoctor family then I would be
very appreciative if you could share this with me before I go. Of course I
realise there may have been a number of Hoctors in Lorrah at the time but you never know.
If David reads this please contact me on pfrick@adam.com.au

David Shakesphere is trying to trace his Mannion relations in the parish of Lorrha. He already has some research done and knows that John married Margaret Hobbins in 1842 while his brother Denis married Bridget Hoctor in 1846 in Lorrha. Around 1850/53 Denis and John, who were both widowed at this time went to England. Their father’s name was Morgan Mannion. Denis and John may have had a third brother by the name of Timothy who had left for England some years earlier and he was married to Margaret O’Meara who it is thought came from Birr or possibly Dunkerrin. Denis remarried a Mary Sherlock in 1865 while living in England but his brother John didn’t remarry.
If anyone can help David to piece the family together he would love to hear from you. He can be contacted at 3 Lillington Avenue, Leamington Spa, Warwichshire, England CV325UF or by email at david.shakesphere@btinternet.com

Thanks to everyone in Lorrha who made me so welcome last night. Even on a dark wet October night I could see how charming a place Lorrha is and there is evidence of a hard working tidy towns committee at work. I'll look forward to a return visit and will meanwhile spread the word about your wonderful community.

Am hoping to visit the area sometime next year and any information about my paternal grandmothers family would be really welcome. She was Mary Bridget Somerville, who went to live in Edinburgh when she was around 18 and her father was Anthony Somerville. They lived at Ballymacegan. I do have some information, but I'm sure that there are people who remember the family. Maybe even relatives.Any help would be most welcome. Thank you. Moira

Pamela Loynes is trying to trace her family roots and would love to hear from Nevin or Doorley families in the parish or anyone who can help them. Her ancestors were John Nevin and Kate Doorley and they had a son Michael born in 1855. They left Lorrha for Australia with their young son Michael in 1856 or 1857.
Kate Doorley’s parents were James Doorley and Ann Mara.
If you can help out here please contact Pamela Loynes, PO Box 668, Anngrley 4103, Australia or email: loynesall@bigpond.com

Hello Rose
I have been browsing through the Lorrha Notes looking for hints re our ancestor named Phillip Sylvester Kelly and his wife Catherine Kelly nee Tuohey .They emigrated to Australia around 1850 .I have read that a publican by the name of Pat Hough is the local authority but his email address is elusive.
We are travelling to Ireland in three weeks time and thought that we would like to visit Lorrha and
look into our family history.
If you could assist us with information or contacts of appropriate people we would be most thankful.
Kind regards
Rob Fister

Dear Rose,

I visited lovely Lorrha last year on a family history quest. I am planning to come back again in June to continue the research into my Carroll ancestors. I am hoping you can publish this email on your Lorrha website. I am looking for people I can talk to who might have some information about my Carroll family.

On 19-1-1837 John Carroll and Judith Heenan from Lackeen were married in the Catholic Church at Lorrha. Their children were baptised in the Catholic Parish at Lorrha as follows:
26-11-1837 William
10-3-1839 John
1-4-1843 Thomas
26-4-1846 Margaret
11-2-1849 Patrick
29-6-1857 James

The two eldest William and John migrated to Australia. John is my great grandfather. Griffiths Valuation showed that in 1851 the family were living at Kilcarren. When the father, John Carroll, died in 1879 his son James was the informant and they were living at Lahinch. When Julia Carroll, the mother, died in 1884 at Lahinch Edward Reddan was the informant and householder.

It was known that some of William and John's siblings went to America. There are no records of Thomas, Margaret, Patrick and James marrying or having children in the area. It is likely that the 4 of them migrated to America.

If anyone can provide additional informarion about this family I would love to take to you when I get to Lorrha.
My email address is carol.oconnor@bigpond.com

My great-grandfather was Patrick O'Meara born 1854 in Rathcabbin to Michael Mara and Ellen Walsh. He and his brothers John & Michael emigrated to New Zealand in 1882. I believe Michael & Ellen had 6 other children & all were baptised at Lorrha Dorrha: > Anne, 11 Jan 1856 > Ellen, 25 Mar 1860 > Martin, 8 Mar 1862 > Mary, 9 Jan 1864 > James, 26 Mar 1865 > Elizabeth, 14 May 1867 My wife and I with our little boy will be in Ireland in mid-May and if it suited it might be quite funny to meet 1 or 2 of our distant relatives. > Richie O'Meara > 67 Howards Drive > Lake Hayes Estate > Queenstown 9304
